So. This weekend was the Texas Scottish Festival and Highland Games. We came, we saw, we..are exhausted. I'm not sure WHY, exactly - both days were "dead" thanks to the uncertain weather.

I hadn't planned on buying *anything* this year. Yes, I had money - we made it to the bank by 2:45! - but....I don't like spending without doing a lot of thought ("big" items, I mean. And the jewelry *I* like....well, it qualifies as "big" in my mind. And....I don't do much other types of buying at the Fests.)

Anyway. Herself and I were on walkabout and we stopped at one of our "cousin's" booths. He is a dealer in artisan jewelry....and he has exquisite taste. (It's who I got my Michale Duncan horse bracelet from, years ago). We looked....he has a new artists. Who has a thing for celtic horses. :head desk:

I walked away. I got about 500 feet, then turned around and came back. I then spent a good 45 minutes drooling and looking and trying on...and came home with this:

:sigh: Horses. It HAD to be horses. The artist is James Walton....and the stuff is gorgeous! I had a hard time deciding between the Amber and the Amethyst......Amber obviously won. I figure "tree tears" sums up last year....I lost Dusty (my favorite horse) and my Dad in the same year (this is chronological, y'all - I got teased on that in our tent.) this is fitting. And it's the only "real" thing I'll be getting myself from the proceeds of Dad's house.

I'm not one to go into Signature or Statement jewelry....but the bracelets both spoke to me. (The first one marks Finn's birth, so it seems fitting to mark Dusty's death too.) I tend to wear the original one most of the time - it's off in the Summer because of the pool, but I tend to wear it all Fall/Winter/Spring. Now I have one for the other wrist.

SG has decided we need to get "nice" wedding bands. The ones we have now I bought - they are inexpensive, but nice; he thinks they're "crap". :sigh: Whatever - HE can spend the $$$. The ones another vendor (also a Clan cousin) has....well, SG fell in LOVE with them. They are also $750+ EACH. They're beautiful....but I'm not sure we NEED them, y'know? (For comparison - both of my bracelets were under $200. Our current bands? Were $50 each, thanks to the exchange rate (they're from Ireland)) :sigh: Ah, well - let him spend that much.

We're going to the Fabric Outlets this week....I have money set aside for it, let's see if I can NOT spend all of it!

First up, in the position of Full Disclosure, entries were WAY DOWN this year from when I last entered (2009, I think.) WAY DOWN. I had wondered why, when the rules clearly state only 1 entry per person per class the admin encouraged me to enter BOTH pairs of socks......

I was the ONLY knitting entry. NO children/juniors/seniors/other adults bothered to enter. :sigh: Irish socks got 1st and my Alhambra got Best of Category (which is funny, because the county rep watching the exhibits (for security) told me that at least 12 people wanted to "liberate" my Irish socks.)

There were *3* entries in Jewelry - Herself got Best in Category AND Grand Champion for her "Blue Scarab" necklace (I'll post photos when we get them back - the ones I took last night, you can read the info card.)

There were maybe 60 photos. SG entered 4. His night photo got Best in Category (1 other entry), his macro photo got Best in Category (1 other entry); his landscape got 1st (about 10 other entries, I think); and his flora entry got Honorable Mention (about 6 other entries). Not bad, but.....not a whole lot of competition, y'know?

Herself's art didn't have much competition, either. Usually, the schools require ALL Art students to enter.....if that's still the case, then there are just NO Art students any more. AT most, across ALL levels, there were 40 entries. (Again, child/junior/senior/adult. Child/junior/senior are ALL school-aged kids.) Her "life and death" got Honorable Mention, and her "Phoenix" got First.

The Grand Champion in Art......well, it wasn't a fair entry. The lady took a photo of our dearly-departed DA and wife and (obviously) used an overhead projector to blow it up on a canvas. She then did a black outline of it......I'm sorry, but I don't think that was a fair entry, because OUT HERE, the way everybody is STILL reeling over it, there's NO WAY the judges wouldn't have tapped it for top honors. (She had another painting entered - we know it was hers because she *signed* both of them....poor form when entries are supposed to be anonymous! - and...well, it was nice but NOT as perfect as the winner.)

There were NO crochet entries, 2 (yes, only *2* - we have a VERY active Quilting Guild out here!) Quilts, 3 total sewing projects, 1 bar of soap, 2 Lego models, 3 sculptures (all school kids), about 10 food entries......dismal.

I guess I need to go back on a mission to try and boost fair entries. :sigh: I've already got 2 entries planned - SG's kilt hose (at his request - he wants them entered) and 1 pair of stranded socks. I'm going to try to get my sweater finished, and then try to get a pair of lacy socks, a hat and a pair of gloves done. If possible, I'll try to get some weaving done, too - there were NO weaving entries. (Also no spinning, but I'm *over* trying to drum up more interest. Last time I did that, I started a guild and promptly got booted out because *I* wanted it to be informal and fun and 2 other people wanted to charge dues. Um. It's dead in the water now from what I can tell.....never mind me, I'm still a little bitter over that.) I'm going to try and nag Herself into doing at least 1 crochet piece, and Himself wants to enter some sort of costuming piece. (When I did this before, entries spiked the next few years and I had some competition. :fingers crossed it works again:)

Why? Because people NEED to have hobbies, and most people need the spur of competition. Honestly, I'm NOT in it for ribbons (because, really? They don't mean much) - I'm in it for the finished items. Spurring people to try and out-do me? Fun stuff.

So. I have my work cut out for me. I was already trying to finish 1 project/ I need to step it up.

No, seriously - I have 2 loverly children, both of whom love me....1 of whom spoils me silly with lovely sparklies.

Behold my Birthday/Hanukkah/Mother's Day present (she gifted me early - she couldn't wait!:):

And a closeup of the dangly part:

necklace closeup

It's all hand-beaded - ALL of it. I told her she could just buy the settings...but no, the pattern called for beaded settings, so beaded settings it would be.

It's a copy of Elizabeth Taylor's "La Peregrina" necklace, but in emerald instead of ruby. I had bought her a magazine with the pattern in it....and she went NUTS. (So did I, but nevermind that.)

She just finished the "matching" earrings, but they're not ready for a closeup yet. :snerk: And yes, I WILL be wearing this - probably at NTIF, in my Nobles garb (I have a loverly court gown in green and gold brocade that I think will set this off really, really well.). And I have agreed to wear it for Shabbat this week....I just have to find something that won't look silly with it.

Herself's been busy beading, so I thought it was probably time to take photos and post a "brag" post for her. (Besides, she's been *begging*, so...why not? Makes for an easy post for me!)

To save bandwidth, I did collages with the photos - 1 for Necklaces, and 1 for Earrings. She wants me to tell y'all that if anyone is interested in maybe acquiring set similar, she's interested. I can post single pictures of any of these - and we're discussing setting up a page on the "farm" website just for her jewelry.

So, without further ado, I give you:

and Earrings:

These are kinda hard to get good photos of, at least here, with my limited set-up. She's using a lot of Swarvoski crystals, and those lovelies are very hard for my camera to catch. Very, very sparkly!

There's some of her "early" stuff in here - bet you can guess! - she's come a LONG way. I am going to end up with way too much bling.....:evil grin: (She's working on my birthday/Hanukkah present right now. I am 1 lucky Mama!)
