OK, so I'm bored and want to play a bit. *g* I know I've got some fiber-y readers, so I thought I'd see who does what.

I don't know if LJ allows anonymous poll-takers, but you can answer in the comments section. If you don't play with fiber - well, why Not?? It's a lot cheaper than therapy! *eg*

I like knitting and spinning about equally. I've been knitting more lately, but that's because I have a few things I'd like to get done before Christmas. I alo really like counted thread embroidery, but I need to save up to get an Ott Lite before I can do any more of that.

My favorite knitting project at the moment is the Peacock Feathers shawl I've been working on periodically over the last couple of months.

Have you spun Optim? If so, what did you think of it? I'm working on some right now and it has a weird plasticky feel to it, even though it's just wool. Albeit wool that's been stretched out so it's finer.

Spinning and knitting I love about equally. I go on a wheel spinning whirl for a while, then I'll do nothing but knit. Then you won't find me anywhere without a spindle in my hand.

Favorite knitting project: The new one I'm all enthused about right now this minute.
What I knit most of: socks. Because I always have at least one pair to carry round with me for spare moments. This year though I have knit 5 scarves for gifts, so my scarf count exceeds my sock count as I'm on my 3rd pair of socks for the year.

Favorite spinning fiber: wool, silk, wool+ blends (merino tencel is fun)

I really needed to be able to pick multiple items on this one. I was torn between spinning and knitting. I picked spinning wheel because it is a new obsession (less than a year); I have been knitting for 30+ years. I also enjoy dyeing, weaving, and a bit of felting. I have always want to learn how to tat.

For favorite project I chose socks, but really it is variable. Right now I am knitting scarves, socks, a wimple, sweaters, and planning a skirt.

My favorite fibers are wool, alpaca, silk, qiviut, and yak. The exotic fibers I have only spun/knit as wool blends. I have not dabbled in plant fibers yet.

I go back and forth between knitting and spinning, and have been on a knitting kick for a while now. I spin mostly wool, but for most of the last year I have been spinning lots of alpaca. I am still working on my first sweater, which has taken me more than 4 years to complete, and I am not enamored of the process, appearantly I need something closer to instant gratification.

I haven't spun Optim - yet, I need to go thru the stash and see what I need to replinish/try. Plastic-y, hmmmmmmmmmm? That doesn't sound too good.

Right now, the wheels are silent - I'm knitting as fast as I can to get the Christmas stuff done. Then I'll be hitting the loom to get the dishtowels off so I can do something...more interesting.

Sounds like me - my favorite fiber is what's currently on the wheel I'm using. Right now, it's Rambo wool in fall colors.

Knitting: I LOVE socks. And hats. And socks. And mittens. Oh, and have I mentioned Socks?? Kids sweaters are fun - and fast, but socks are faster.

Scarves....ick. I find them boring, all that knit-knit-knit-knit-turn-knit-knit-knit-knit-turn ad infinitum. The Vegan Fox, however, was fun...I must ponder another one of those.

Yeah - I tried to go in and edit the poll, but couldn't find a way to do it. *sigh* I tend to go overboard in a category (except tatting - I want to learn!) and do it obsessivly for a few months, then go back to rotating thru them.

It's really odd, because Optim is 100% merino wool, and it's not superwash. the fibers have just been stretched out so they're finer. I've felt yarn spun from Optim and it felt fine. I suspect my problem might be that I'm trying to spin it very very very fine.

I'm in the midst of designing some wristwarmer/fingerless glove-mitten things for my father's new wife. She's 20 and this is her first Christmas in the US, and after I talked to my sister last night I decided it would be a nice gesture for me to do something for her. It's not her fault that my dad's a perv (he's almost 65, I am 31 and my sister is 28), and she seems to be a sweet girl. So far, I've decided on a picot edge and now I'm trying to find a small symmetrical cable that isn't too complicated, as the yarn I'm using is variegated blues and greens.

Ummm - to put it mildly, YES. Once you get in the groove, you can run thru a pound of yarn in an hour. Figure maybe a 1/2 hour to ply it up (or less - I've honestly never timed myself)....and then it's on to the knitting part.

Spinning is fun, it's addictive, and it's dead easy. (Once you get over the learning curve). Plus, You get to design the yarn, and the colors, and the structure.....it is, really, once you've got the equipment, cheaper to spin it. (Don't laugh - I bought some kid mohair for $5/pound, and some silk for....$15/4 oz (I think), and the resulting yarn is awesome and I've been offered $50/skein for it. I turned it down - this yarn is for a blanket for Me.)

I have yet to complete an adult-sized sweater....I'm like you - I like the quick projects.

One of these days I'll have a hand-knit sweater....maybe. Until then, the kids get to enjoy them.
