Normal to be skitchy about cutting into the good stuff. I still am. Good scissors are a must - and a blessing.
Skirt will probably not be a problem, since it's a full skirt there's room for error. (At least in the back - and the front skirt is just in the front).
My first FBA was pretty silly, admittedly. Good that the pattern worked! You might find that some of them do, straight up. And some don't. Like the diamond dress. Is what it is.
