which is normal, right? :sigh:

Herself had a doc appt last week...she's got something going on with her thyroid. She has an appt with an endocrinologist on the 9th to see what we need to do. Fun - and worrisome! - times!

Goat kids are doing well. We have dried up Annie - leaving me with 3 on the stand - because she couldn't get on the stand by herself, and she got diarrhea, which is BAD for goats. Her milk production had dropped to nearly nothing - which is unusual for her - so, I made the call. I put her on some loading doses of antibiotic, and have been forcing hay and grain down her. :sigh: She's out right now, eating weeds. I'll put her up shortly - it's Not Raining now, but it will rain soon.

We currently have a very pissed off sparrow fledgling in the Studio. He (she?) fell out of the nest yesterday morning and Chloe grabbed him. We got him away from her, but it seems like his leg may be broken. So, into a shoebox in the Studio he went. He's active - he got out of the box for a few hours last night - and has his first flight feathers, so maybe he'll make it. I hope so.....

I will have photos later - they're on my phone, not my laptop. :sigh: I'll transfer them over at doe point soon......

We're OK!

So far, most of the tornados/high winds have passed around us, not over us. Thank God for that! We're just waterlogged and muddy.

Been running around trying to pull together info to apply for Disability for Herself. It's not something I *want* to do...but I need to. :sigh: She simply doesn't function well enough to be able to hold a job - case in point, yesterday at the theater.

We went to see "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (good movie, not great, but fun. NOT for the..under 10 crowd, but fun) at 11:20. The building was empty - I think there were 4 other people in our theater with us. Halfway thru the movie, she leans over and whispers "I need to go to the bathroom." "OK." I say.

A few minutes later, I say "Honey, if you need to go, GO." "NO." :sigh: A few minutes later, she's squirming, so I say, again, "Honey, go ahead and go!" "NO. Not alone!" :bangs head:

Yes. *I* had to take my almost 18-year old daughter to the bathroom, because she refused to go by herself. In a pretty much empty building, with the bathrooms clearly marked. It's aggravating, because she should be able to do that (most *8* year olds can do that by themselves!)....but she can't.

I'm pretty sure they'll deny it, and we'll have to appeal. NOT what I want to do, but what choice do we have? Her survivor's benefits ends at the end of May.....and while I could get a part-time job, it'll cut into the homeschooling time with Himself. (And it would leave him alone with her, which....isn't really ideal. She doesn't do that well without supervision, unfortunately.)

Anyway, SS is do to call me in about 15 minutes. Should be fun - NOT!

Updated count:

doelings: 4 (+1 dead)
bucklings: 1 (+2 dead)

So.....as you know, I induced Risky Saturday evening. I did it after a LOT of soul-searching; her due date (day 150) was 5/10; they can go 5 days before - 5 days after (but after the fiasco that was Mocha and Annie a few years ago, NONE of my goats will go more than 36 hours or so over their due date.) SG and I had a HUGE fight over this, but Risky had started showing signs of early labor on Monday (pawing, avoiding the other goats, not *eating*) and by Saturday all she was doing was laying in one sot moaning. I decided that having her pop on day 144 (which would have been today, and still early) would be better than making her wait any longer. (When you induce, you give them Lute. 36 hours later (or so), you have babies. I NEVER do it willy-nilly, I always make sure we're within (or close) to day 145 or later, and I make sure I have a damn good reason to induce. This year, I did Inara, because we weren't going to be home on her due date (she went the day before), I did Annie (because I will NOT let her go over - she's a smaller goat, and I don't want to lose her like we did Mocha), and I did Zoe because she was due tomorrow, and, again - we aren't going to be home.)

Cut because it got long. Click here! )

Oh, and to top it off? The insurance adjuster came out on Friday, and not only were the barns damaged, but we need a new roof. :fun: And it's my fault that the adjuster came out.....even though I simply did what I was told and reported the barn damage. I......don't get it, but such is life.
fiberaddict: (Default)
Don't know if our night made the national news - it did make the local! - but, first - we are all OK. Animals and people. Including the 2 new babies Inara gave us last night.

Doeling: 2
Buckling: 1

Anyway, we had MAJOR storms roll through.....at 8:30 last night the rain was HORIZONTAL. Freaky! At 11:30 PM we went out to check on Inara (and the horses)...but we didn't SEE the damage clearly until this AM.

I'll just...show you:

The milk room roof:

storm - milkroom

The hay barn:

storm - hay barn

The buck barn:

storm - buck barn

The "missing" roof:

storm - roof

(that's in the neighbor's pasture...about 50 feet from the barn.)

It.....wow. There are tree limbs down everywhere. The news says there's lots of damage in town - doesn't surprise me!

Oh, and Ali - April is doing GREAT. The Bo-Se shot apparently flipped a switch - she is taking full bottles now, and demanding MORE. She's not real happy this morning, having to share her space with 2 interlopers that get bottles while she is STARVING. :snicker:

We're waiting on the insurance adjuster now, but I have a feeling this is going to come in just under our deductible. We'll see......

A DIGITAL kiln - for $300. With extras! Let me back up....

2 days ago, I couldn't sleep, so I got up and hit CraigsList (as one does.) On a lark, I went to a neighboring CL (instead of the Dallas one), and there was a new listing for a Paragon TnF kiln...in Grand Prairie. About 1 hour from us. :hmmmmmmm: No photos, so I sent off an email and asked.

Yesterday, I got the photos. I'll include 2 here, so you can see why I got excited:

Paragon kiln inside

Paragon kiln front

I asked her about it; she bought it new in 1997-ish (according to the controller - that's the first year that this model was made. She thinks she bought it in 1994...but the number doesn't match that.), made 12 dolls with it, then packed it up in her garage and started playing with her grandkids. She needs to clean out the garage, so...it needed to go.

This thing is PRISTINE. It honestly looks new - there's 1 ding in the brick in the lid, and 1 ding on the outside casing, but other than that it's new. She plugged it in for us and the electronics work; the elements look..well, new, so we said "Here, take my money please!" and loaded it up.

She included 2 full shelves, 1 1/2 shelf, all the posts, a bunch of cones, and a set of modeling tools. And a rolling stand for it, to make it easier for us to move it around. It's not even half the size of the Skutt, but you know what? It's actually the *perfect* size for what Herself wants to do with it. (Jewelry components. I did a quick estimate - she should be able to get components for 70 pairs of earrings in this thing each firing. Maybe more - I was conservative!)

It's large enough to do mugs and bowls, too - and plates or tiles. She's not into that - yet - but she might be later. It's set up for porcelain (with 3" bricks instead of 2.5"), so she can fire anything she wants - including glass and PMC!. OH, and did I mention it has digital controls? No more babysitting the entire firing!! (Just the end, to make sure it does shut off like it's supposed to.)

So. Herself's birthday is now sorted (for real!), as is Himself's. :whew: Now I can look at getting *me* something with what's left of the refund (besides my washer and mixer, I mean - both of those are "household", not personal.)

In other news: yesterday I made soap! I wanted to test the shaped ice cube trays I bought from Think Geek, and I wanted to test a new scent (Neroli and Shea Blossom. :mmmmmm:) I didn't have any small containers of milk, so I thawed a pint of cream....I forgot that cream = soap on a stick. I was able to beat it into shape and glop it into the molds; the soap looks good, but I won't un-mold it until tomorrow (because of the details. I want it firm.) I'm thawing a gallon of milk right now - I have an AWESOME idea for the Neroli-Shea Blossom....a 3 color soap. Not a swirl...we'll see if I can *do* it. If so, I'll have an awesome soap. If not...I'll have some 3 color laundry soap. :snicker: At least it'll smell nice!

Laters!

Seriously - GOOD! Remember how we talked about "balloons" a while back? Well.....I got a whole bouquet last night!!!!!

Let me back up....SG has been a brat lately. I understand *why*, but...it's hard when he comes home, grabs dinner, and goes off into another room to play You Tubes and play with RC toys. :sigh: And then yells at *us* because he's "out of the loop". :bangs head: Anyway....

Last night after dinner, I decided to browse CraigsList (as one does). I skimmed the free/pets/arts and crafts, and then, on a *whim*, I searched for "kiln". See, we bought Herself a small "starter" kiln (Paragon Firefly) for her last birthday. She LOVES it, but...it's analog, you have to babysit it, and it's SMALL (which was the point. As kilns go, it's one of the less expensive - and it cost us (from a DISCOUNT dealer!) almost $400. FYI.) The firing space is 4"x4"x4" - small. I have looked at trying to upgrade it, but the cost was prohibitive, so - I've been watching CL to see a) what's out there and b) what they're going for.

The 2nd listing was "Electric Ceramic Kiln, $25 (Greenville)". WHAT???? I clicked it, thinking "Nah, it's a typo". Um...no. Lady had *2* kilns that worked when she stored them (about 10 years ago), and she was OVER it - wanted them GONE. I asked if she'd hold 1 until Friday - nope, GONE, remember? So, I got directions and planned on heading out.

SG decided that HE needed to go (which...is odd, because he doesn't like leaving home when he's home, y'know?) I grabbed Herself (because, if it worked out, this would be a very early Birthday present), and we all headed out. At 6:30 PM. To a place 1.5 hours away.

Yes, we brought home a kiln. Looks like a Stutt (good brand), looks to be in decent shape. I sent photos to my potter friend - she says that even if we need to replace all the elements and most of the firebricks we got a FANTASTIC deal.

Kiln sitter

Kiln side

Kiln inside

Kiln front

It's....big. Has a kiln sitter (which means no more babysitting!) It's modular, which means we can work on 1 section at a time, and use that while we work on the next one. And - it's BIG.

And it was $25!!!!!

I did a quick price check - from the dealer we got the Firefly from (and they are DISCOUNT, remember!), a similar Stutt is $2500. (But it's "missing" a layer or 2). I need to get a 220 plug put into the Studio, and I want someone to look at the kiln to tell me what I need to fix. On CL, smaller kilns go for $500+ - so even repairing it we'll come out ahead.

:happy dance: Now I need to find more ceramics books for Herself....she's got NO excuse (well, once we get it OK'd for use) to not play with clay!

Yes, God is GOOD. FANTASTIC, in fact!
fiberaddict: (Default)
So. Today was Ortho day. Both kids are doing well - in fact, they are in line to have the braces removed within the next 6 or so months! But....Herself needs to have her wisdom teeth extracted. :sigh:

Made an appointment for the consultation.....and I've started preparing her. She does better if she KNOWS what's going to happen, when. Fun times!

Kilt hose: The heel is TURNED!!!! and I am cruising down the foot. I had to buy more yarn....I have 5 balls. 1 is still knit in the too-small hose, but can easily be frogged (I...just haven't wanted to. Yet.) The problem? I've already got 2 balls in this sock, and I still have a LOT of foot to go. :sigh: I am starting to panic a bit, because I hate the thought of running out of yarn mid-project. And then there's the dye lot problem.....

I found a lady on Ravelry who had 6 skeins for $20 (these normally run $6/skein!!)...I figure, I'll get them and knit the 2nd sock from them, because I'm pretty sure there's no way they'll match the dye lot I have. (Of course, there could be a miracle. I'm not sure I merit one, but - it IS possible.) I'm sure she bought matching dye lots, so there shouldn't be a problem within each sock, and you shouldn't notice the mis-match when it's on a different sock.

Tomorrow I get to go do some work. I don't mind - $$ for me! And since my friend didn't get into the Fiber Festival this year, that means I get to do a Yarn Store run in the next week or so - should be fun!

Laters! I have knitting to do!
fiberaddict: (Default)
and rainy, here. We need the rain, but I could do without the freezing temps. :shiver:

We saw Night at the Museum 3...it was good. Sad, especially at the end when the decision is made about the tablet, but good. Still want to see the Imitation Game.

I a suffering from an inability to count to 6. I've had to rip out the Aunt's cowl 3x now....:sigh: Still, it should be finished today. I hope.

We went to Half Price yesterday - I picked up 1 of the 2 books I'm missing in the Aubrey/Maturin series, plus the unfinished 21st (I'm reading the 4th, now. Would be further along, but I only seem to read on the weekends.). Also got a copy of Jenny Dean's "Wild Color" - for $8. (Less the 20% sale!) No, I don't do natural dyeing - but at that price I couldn't leave it.

Oh! I hit Etsy for *me*, this year. Don't have it yet, but I scored a pair of painted Converse-clones for - get this! - $35. HAND-painted, in any theme you want. I got a pair of Dr. Who shoes - we're going to Comic Con this February, and while I don't dress up (Herself has a costume almost ready to go), I do like to let my Geek flag fly. (And since there's 3 Dr. Who actors going to be there, plus 2 ST:TNG and 2 StarGate....yeah, it's gonna be FUN!). I had planned on trying to decorate my own, but I priced the shoes.....$39 for Converse at the Famous Footwear Outlet. $20 for Converse clones at Wally-world. $5 for comic books to cut up (to decoupage unto the shoes), plus modpodge and resin (to waterproof the shoes).....by the time I started figuring up my time, I figured it was cheaper - and easier! - to just buy a pair already hand-painted.

Hanukkah was a hit this year - Himself scored video games (I have to say - go with Humble Bundle. A slew of games for whatever YOU want to pay, proceeds go to charity. Pay more than the minimum (usually around $6), and you get another game or 2. These are GOOD games, too, not alpha ones - one of the latest bundles included Bioshock 1 and 2!); Herself got woolies and crafting stuff. Good times!

Gotta run - need to dig up some food, then head out to start morning stables. It's COLD......ah, well. It's December - it should be cold!
fiberaddict: (Default)
We just got home from the ER. Today was Take-the-Aunt-Shopping-Day. We were at her local Thrallmart (about 50 miles from home), in the checkout, when Herself suddenly said "I'm hot. And I can't see!"...and she fainted into the grocery cart. She came too almost immediately, and I made her sit down and put her head between her knees while I finished checking out (we were almost done, and the store was pretty packed. No, I'm not heartless - she said - at that point - she was fine). Wrapped it up, got her up, walked about 5 feet, and she said "Nope!" and gracefully fell to the floor.

Luckily, Himself caught her so she landed softly. 2 Paramedics were suddenly *there*, and they did a quick evaluation. All her vitals were normal, she seemed fine, so they let her go - after I promised to call her doctor, which I did once we were in the car.

Doc said "Nope! Go to the ER with her!". SO, we took Auntie home and unloaded, then I called SG and we headed to our ER, where he met us.

Got there around 12:30. At 4:30, they decided it was dehydration (fits) and told us what we needed to do. At 5, they let us go, so we ran home, fed critters, then headed to dinner (because the doc said that lack of food might contribute, as well.)

So, she and I have challenged each other in regards to water consumption. IF this happens again, she'll go in for an EKG harness - the EKG today was perfect, but it was only for that period of time we were there. The doc said next step is a 3-day test, to rule out any oddity.

So - how was your day????
fiberaddict: (Default)
Herself has been feeling sick, so I've spent the last 2 nights on the futon (for some reason, when she's feeling "off", she wants to sleep on the sofa. :Sigh: And she wants Mama near. :big sigh:

She's not feeling TOO bad though - right now the kids are doing their Home-Ec class. This week, it's Carrot Cake from scratch...and my kitchen is a disaster area. *I* am staying out of it - I will advise, I will demonstrate, but I am NOT doing the actual baking/mixing/reading of recipe. That's all on them. So far, Himself's done the dry mixing while Herself's done the wet - I had to shred the carrots, because the food processor kinda scares *both* of them. :snicker: It should go well with tonight's dinner - I put chili in the crock pot this AM, and it smells FABULOUS.

2.5 repeats to go on the scarf! I can see the light!!!

I need to stay off of Ravelry a bit.....see, Rav has a function where you can look up patterns/yarns and see what people have done with them. You can also look into people's stashes to see what the yarns look like under different lighting conditions. However.....Rav also has a function within "Stash" called "For Sale or Trade". :gulp: VERY dangerous, that is!

I, um...well. I scored a "Lucky Jack" Tsock Tsarina kit from a destash, and the pattern for "Lobster Quadrille". And an online friend picked up "York and Lancaster" for me from the Fiber Festival this Weekend (I think it's the "Big E", but I'm not sure.)...so I have 3 Tsocks coming. And another I've inquired about. :sigh: I need to step AWAY from the forum. (I LOVE Tsocks. They aren't normal mindless knitting, which is why I like them. And they're always inventive!) Oh, and I have a few more marked for later.....

Anyway. I need to see why the kitchen's gone quiet, and start thinking about lunch.

Hope your weekend goes well!!
fiberaddict: (Default)
Let's see.....today the kids are learning how to make bread the "old fashioned" way - by hand. Granted, we tried to use my KitchenAid, but....we kinda sorta maybe blew the motor (I am smelling hot metal when it runs, so....I think I may need to replace it next year. :sigh:)

Last week, they made plain white sandwich bread in the bread maker, this week it's Jewish Rye. *I* made a bad mistake, though - I forgot that we put honey in the sponge. When the KA started smelling, Himself shut it off and *I* grabbed the dough to mix it....and now my hands are all itchy and red. :big sigh: (Bigger sigh - *I* shouldn't taste-test the bread. I will, though - I figure, if I have to do Benedryl ANYWAY, I might as well taste the fruit of my labors, right?)

Yesterday I dyed 2 batches of yarn - photos later. Both blue, both different. I need to dye at least 1 more batch - this time in green. I need to reknit Fiber Festival (I HATE the gray the original pair was knit in. I know the Tsock Tsarina chose the color, but ICK. I don't wear them because I don't like GRAY. Green, I'll wear.)...which leads to my next thought.

Hearthie did a post on God's Will, and how we shouldn't "brag" on our plans. (OK, so Paul says we shouldn't brag, she just quoted him.) Does this mean we should NOT plan at all?

Nope. Bearing in mind that Man plans and God laughs (seriously, He does.), and that our plans are subject to His Will, we still need to plan things. I mean....I already have doctor appointments set up for next year! If I were to wait until then, I wouldn't be able to get in, y'know? BUT. I always know that just because *I* plan to see the doctor next June, for example, it doesn't mean I actually will keep the appointment. God may have other plans for me which supersede mine.

So. I have a TON of socks kitted up (I think I'm at 24 or so now. Maybe more.). I've decided that, once my present knitting is done I will focus on getting them knit up. They're not all for me, so this'll also knock out some presents as well....but I've had some of these kits for YEARS. It's time I knit them up and actually wear the socks...which will free up space for me to kit up some of the other patterns I have - thanks to Ravelry. (Ravelry has been bad for me, because of the pattern database. There are a TON of patterns - both free and paid! - there.....and I am weak.)

Herself is having a ball today playing with polymer clay. I am the proud owner of a custom Toothless necklace; she's making herself a Stormfly choker. (Astrid's dragon - both from "How to Train Your Dragon".) I'm glad to see her playing again - it's been a while. I mean, yes, she's been playing with the porcelain, but it's not the same - with polymer she's playful and cute and inventive. She's more timid with the porcelain.....it's kinda sad.

Gotta go check on the bread - it's almost time to beat it down and shape it. Laters!
fiberaddict: (Default)
I get it, I really do. Herself is sick - doc says it's just a nasty upper respiratory thing (aka "cold") and that there's really NOTHING we can do except ride it out. I get that it's annoying to have a stuffy nose...but OY! The drama! The dramatic heavy breathing when asked a question/to do something! :sigh:

Yesterday was lovely. We went for a walk and saw more butterflies than I have EVER seen in 1 place before (including the butterfly garden!) TONS of Monarch butterflies were flitting around - it was GORGEOUS! We also saw 2 coyotes and a woodpecker, and heard the young Red-tailed hawk. The Golden Eagle is MIA (and has been for a couple of years - guess they moved on?) - it was lovely. The fasting, not so much. Apparently my limit is 24.5 hours.....:sigh: At least I made it that long, right? :bigger sigh:

SG is supposed to replace the disposer today :fingers crossed: I'm tired of only having half a sink.

I'm working on the bird.....I'm working my way up the leg, now. I'm so ready for this pair to be DONE....I wanna knit with something Not-Orange for a while. And mindless....

Gotta go check on Herself - she's finally drifted off. I think. I hope. Sleep cures a lot of ills....
fiberaddict: (Default)
Herself is MUCH better today, thank you! She slept soundly last night, and woke up ready to take on the world. Or at least, Canton Trade Days. I'm glad we went today instead of tomorrow; we found a "new" vendor (new to us, anyway!) that carries mostly old-fashioned hand-tools. Like the planes SG has been hunting. For reasonable prices.

A few weeks ago, SG showed me a video of Chris Schwartz (some big woodworking guru) - he was using a plow plane. SG remarked that he'd like one, but new they were in the $500+ range (the one Chris was using was $1700. !!!!)

Anyway, we're browsing the booth...and I see not 1 but *2* plow planes. 1 had a bunch of blades with it - but it was priced a little out of our budget. SG sighed and bought a Stanley plane, a...something else, and an old oil can. I asked the guy what was the least amount he'd take for the bells-n-whistles plane....and he said, well, I take checks, you know, and let me see...how 'bout $100? I had my checkbook out faster than SG could say "Yes".

SG has promised to finish my weaving cabinet soon. He also offered to buy me the 2 broken-down spinning wheels another seller had....problem is that only 1 was almost complete. And...it's gonna cost more than the thing is worth to get it to usable condition (it's missing the Mother-of-All, the flyer and bobbin assembly and the wooden screw blocks needed to tension the missing MoA. SG can't do metal smithing, which is necessary for the orifice and bobbin rod.....we *could* purchase an Ashford flyer unit, but it wouldn't match and might not even work correctly on the old wheel. :sigh: It was a pretty thing....but I won't spend $100 on a non-fixable beauty prop. :big sigh:

Ah, well - we had fun. And Herself still feels good!

I've been lesson-planning. Looks like our Home Ec course will be on Mondays - it's a non-full day (ish - Friday is our light day, but I want to keep it that way for Shabbat-prep). We're starting with scrambled eggs - that way she can cook *something* decent right out the gate. I have the Jan/Feb 1998 issue of Cook's Illustrated which has "fluffy scrambled eggs", "Best Bacon" (we'll use either Turkey or Beef bacon, of course!), Jewish Rye Bread, and Carrot Cake - that's a whole month, right there! We'll do a lot of it later in the day, so that supper will be taken care of - she learns to cook and *I* don't have to prep dinner. Win/win! I have 9 issues of Cook's Illustrated and 7 issues of Martha Stewart Living (I know, but - she's got good ideas.) - that should keep us busy this year! (And, we might do more than 1x/week. We'll see.)

Gotta re-boot the laundry. Hope y'all have a great day!

We were supposed to go to the Fair today......didn't happen. Herself got sick last night - she finally fell asleep around 2 AM. On the couch. I was on the futon to keep an eye on her. 3 hours later, I'm up......3 hours of sleep is NOT enough for me. I've been a zombie all day.

We managed to get her in to the doctor - it appears to be a cold. But. Because her cycles have been off-the-wall-weird the past 3 months (she's been bleeding for 3 weeks straight this time), the doc sent us to the lab for blood draws. And put her on birth control pills. :sigh: and :huzzah: (I had forgotten that I had to go on BCP myself to get my cycles straightened out. Wish I had remembered this sooner!)

Anyway, we picked up her prescription and headed home. She was feeling better, and requested Henk's European Deli for lunch. I double- and triple-checked that she was sure; we went, we ate, and we hit the Half-Price books right across the street. Where I discovered that magazines are only $1.....:sigh:

We now have enough Cook's Illustrated and Martha Stewart Living for me to put together a Home Ec. course. As soon as I get some sleep, I'll go thru and start planning it - I want both kids to be able to cook - more than just box dinners! - and understand WHY you do certain things. Himself can already cook pretty good (but he's afraid of the oven, ever since he accidentally melted a spatula he forgot to remove from his dish. Ah, well - BTDT!), but Herself has been resistant up till now.

I'm so tired I can't knit! (You know it's bad....) But! I also picked up some Interweave Knits and some Clearance Books....I'm good for reading material for a while. :weak grin:
fiberaddict: (Default)
because it's been go-go-go the past few days, and tomorrow it continues. :sigh:

Yesterday was Town Day. It was a late one - we had an Ortho appointment at 12, so we started school...and was promptly interrupted by the phone. A Rabbit Rescuer 65 miles North of us was desperate - she had a clutch of 10 newborn bunnies and needed raw goats milk STAT. NO One on her contact list would part with milk, so she went to the ADGA site and started calling from there. We were #20 on her list...I couldn't turn her down. We DO have milk, and we had planned on running out that direction (but not as far) anyway today, so......we left at 7:45 this AM and just got home.

It was productive! After dropping off the 2 gallons of milk (1 frozen from last year, 1 from this AM), we headed to the Ceramic Supply shop my friend told me about. (Trinity Ceramics) They are FABULOUS! We walked in shortly after they opened; the guy asked if he could help us and I said "We just bought her a kiln for her birthday, and have NO CLUE what to do now. Pretend we are clueless (because we are) and tell me what I need to buy for her."

He was stellar - instead of taking advantage of me (which he totally could have done) he asked her what she wanted to make. And she ANSWERED HIM. (This is HUGE - she doesn't LIKE talking to anyone, especially not strangers. And not strange men). He said we needed to start with porcelain, not stoneware, and here was a good beginner set of tools, and here's another set for detail work, and oh - here, in case you want to attach pieces together you'll need *this*. What about colors? These you have to do *this*, and these - know what? You'll probably want *these* underglaze pens, because Reasons, and you'll need this overglaze. Oh, and a book...this one (Ceramic Jewelry)...in fact, I'm just about to mark all these down, so I'll discount it for you.

In all, he spent a good hour with us, giving reasons why she'd probably like this better than that, but maybe later she'd try this, and oh, yeah, metal clay is different, but it's highly expensive so yeah, start with porcelain and THEN move to it when you're comfortable with the whole firing process. And I only spent $140!! (For 50 pounds of clay and all the other stuff!)

Then we hit Half Price. She cleaned out the bead section, and Himself got a couple of "interesting" books. (He's reading. I don't care that one was a Dictionary - he's READING.)

So. We're back home, the Jeep is unloaded, and I want to collapse in a heap. We accomplished a LOT, though, so I'm not complaining. Too much. And Herself is just all fired up (no pun intended!) because of all the stuff - she's got Plans.

I need to tidy in the Studio....it's bad. I want to get photos...but I'm tired. So...laters!

Waterlogged, thank God, but alive! It's been raining since...Sunday? Saturday? Anyway - we NEED the rain. No complaining here!

Let's see:

1. Baby birds have been moved to a rehab facility. They were doing well, but the round-the-clock-every-2-hours-feedings were getting to us. Plus we have things to do outside the house this week (and next week the kids are at Granny's!)....so, they needed a place where they'd get the care that they need.

2. Pool guy....he's not very punctual, but hey! You can see the bottom of the pool now! And we are supposed to be able to actually SWIM this weekend! Can't beat that! Granted, we're paying for the help - but I'm at the point I don't care. I want to SWIM, darn it!

3. Yesterday we ran and picked up a new "soaping center" for me. It's an old Hoosier cabinet (in really poor condition...it looks good on the outside, but.....). First up, it is NOT a valuable antique. (Want to get that out of the way.) Which is good, considering what I'll be doing with/to it. All my soaping supplies fit in it (with room to spare, actually!), and my molds fit perfectly on the slide out top. It makes that area of the Studio look MUCH nicer - and I have more room!

The ready-to-go soaps are in the armoire (that used to be my soaping center - we did a bit of moving around Monday.), as are the mailing supplies and my "spare" appliances. It is so much neater than the open shelving that used to be there....the Studio is now trashed, but it'll get put back together soon. Maybe next week.

The Hoosier cabinet needs to be repainted, and the bottom...well, it's been water damaged and wasn't attached any more. When we got it home we discovered this (no, we didn't notice the damage at the lady's house - it was in the garage, crammed into a corner, and on a quick glance it looked fine. Got it home, though, and I discovered the bottom corner wasn't attached anymore. Ah, well...) ...I ran to Ace and picked up some corner braces and did a quick repair. IF I had wanted to take the time, I would have cut some plywood and replaced the bottom...but rain was coming and I wanted the thing IN the house. I need to make a shelf for the bottom (the brackets are there, but no shelf), and I need to get new drawer pulls for it. Oh, and I need to install a catch for the bottom door - it won't stay closed. Again, it's perfect for what I wanted it for, and I got it for a good price.

4. Unemployment denied my claim.....boo-hoo. I'm not upset (too much) by it - I am NOT looking for another job, and it felt wrong to keep looking at ads.....and, honestly, as long as I watch the budget we'll be fine.

5. I'm still a little miffed at my husband. 3 weeks ago, I discovered my MacBook Pro screen was *shattered*. I asked everybody - the kids were shocked, SG said "No! What happened???" :sigh: Found out that evening that HE had dropped something on my MacBook, but hadn't realized it broke the screen until I called him.

It's not so much that he broke it, it's that he lied about it. He's ALWAYS on the kids' butts about not taking responsibility...and yet, when it came time to model it, he bailed. :big sigh: Oh, and also I had just decided the night before to NOT replace the laptop with my severance; I had decided that I could live with the slightly slower response time. :bangs head: (A new screen from Apple will supposedly run about $700+; for that, I'll just add a few hundred more and get me a new Air. SG wants this one; he says he'll find an after market screen and replace it himself. Whatever....) I'll get over it...but I really didn't want to spend the $$$$.

Today is grocery and orthodontist day; tomorrow is book store (hey, Himself actually ASKED for a few books! Yes, I'm going to capitalize on this!); Friday is a lunch date with a friend. Saturday is going-to-Granny's day.....I need a break!

1. Picked up the check Friday @ 10. Got it in the bank; the funds are mostly on hold until 7/1. :sigh: and :figures:

2. Saturday morning, Zoe - the last preggers doe standing - came up for morning stables with a cute little tricolor buckling wobbling behind her. She wasn't interested in him, so I grabbed him up (he was dry but his ears were still damp), checked him over (perfect!) and put him with the others. The afterbirth was still wet and shiny, so she'd just slipped it.....he's GORGEOUS, but a he. :sigh: If it quits raining tomorrow (kinda hope not...) I'll get photos of all of 'em, because I have GOT to get them listed for sale.

3. We were out and about yesterday, and we found a metal cart for Herself's kiln...for $48. Himself is assembling it right now - it's red, it smells, but it'll be perfect for her. :win!:

4. Today we're rehabilitating some baby sparrows. SG decided to clean off the back porch - I had told him he really should wait, because the birds were all still visiting the nests, but he was tired of the flies and mess. The nest he knocked down had 2 babies in it....so his conscience struck and we have them in a box with the heat lamp over them. I am not holding out much hope here.... (the cart mentioned in #3 will become the incubator - we need a place to hang the heat lamp from, and it'll be perfect for that.)

Not much else going on - my life right now consists of bottles/milking/school/knitting/repeat. I'm tired...but it could be worse. We only have 4 does on the stand now....very do-able, but still a lot of work. At least we're on our summer schedule with school - very laid back and minimal.

OK, so:

Friday: We took Herself out to lunch, and I got a phone call from Texas Worker's Comp (aka: Unemployment). Seems Ms. boss is fighting my unemployment. :sigh: That's an hour and a half of my life that's just GONE. And they may deny my payments. :big sigh:

I did NOT hear anything from my attorney. I am hoping it's because they (work) caved, but because the office is closed on Friday they have until today to get the checks to my attorney. (Hey, I can hope, right??) SG is upset that my att'y didn't call me - I pointed out that every call is more $$$, and maybe he figured I'd think what I am, so why call until today? I hope......:big sigh:

Friday evening: Inara presented us with 2 lovely, big, BOYS. :groan: They are cute - not as gorgeous as Risky's 2, but cute! - and huge. I'm going to advertise them with the Firefly angle - since the sire is our Malcolm Reynolds ...it should make shippers everywhere rejoice.

Saturday: Herself's party. Went well. Watched Frozen...... and :evil grin:, because EVERYBODY got the ear worm! We had pizza and ice-cream...yum!

Sunday: Worked on getting the pool open (finally!) I swear, this year I am running the pump all winter and keeping the chlorine tablets in - because I am TIRED of not being able to swim until late June/early July. :sigh:

And, um, knitting happened. I finished travel sock #1 and started the 2nd, I worked on Himself's kilt hose, and I got halfway down the leg of my next sock. (Yes, that is a lot of knitting. I figured it was better to channel my nervous energy into Making Something instead of just sitting and worrying.) Of course, this has left my wrist all wonky.....:big sigh:

So, nothing new to report on the work front. Lots of knitting - I need to take pictures. And I need a nap....

Besides Friday the 13th, I mean.....it's Herself's 17th birthday! Where DID the time go???

She is all flutter-pated; she opened the big box from SG and freaked. Why? Because it was a brand new Paragon Firefly kiln, that's why. (And if you're in the market, I recommend www.clay-king.com, because their prices are the BEST I was able to find. This kiln normally runs $600+ for the base model; clay-king was $400 and free shipping. We got a shelf and a fancy-smancy pyrometer for $460.)

Now I have to figure out how to budget for precious metal clay, ceramic clay, and glass to fuse.

In other news, haven't heard anything from my attorney. They have until today...and I wouldn't be surprised if her attorney wasn't waiting until the last minute again. :sigh: :drums fingers:

Gotta get - we got errands to run. It's a no school day, because birthdays mean No School! :happy dance:
