So. Got the new embroidery machine on Monday, but it was too late by the time I got home to try it out. Same thing Tuesday (see, I can't go to my Studio if I get home and Suki is out. She goes nuts, runs out the pet door, and attacks any dog that goes out after her. She ONLY does this if *I* open the door to go outside. It's weird. Anyway, my Studio time is in the mornings. I shower, feed the dogs and lock her up, then go out to do my thing. She gets let out at 2-ish, and I am stuck in the house form that point. If I HAVE to go out, she gets locked up until I either get in the Studio, when a kid will let her out, or until I come back inside. Sucks, but what do you do?) - so, today, I got to put the Brother thru it's paces.

Let me cut to the chase - if you are thinking about maybe getting into machine embroidery, buy a Brother. I can't speak for the combo machines, but if they are anything like the stand-alones, they are *awesome*.

I set it up, flipped thru the owner's manual (it's a bit different from the Singer), then hooped up some cotton, plugged in my USB, and let her rip.

It. Stitched. Out. PERFECTLY.

Next up, fleece. The thread got caught in the bobbin slit (not the machine's fault - I should have turned the bobbin so the slit was on top. My bad!), then I broke a needle because I didn't push it up far enough. I got things sorted, and it Stitched. Out. PERFECTLY.

The Singer? I think, in the almost 3 years I've had it, and the 15 or 20 projects I did on it, I only managed *1* perfect stitch-out. *1*. EVERY other project has had something borked - usually skipped stitches or bird's nests.

Now, granted, when I ordered the machine Friday I added in a box of 24 pre-wound bobbins - but that shouldn't make that much of a difference. I also added in the extra hoop package (4 hoops; 3 of which are "new" sizes) - for a grand total of $687, delivered. The dealer wanted $1200 for (basically) the (same, almost) machine. (since I can't use the software or the classes.) For another $18 I got a repositionable hoop, so I can do projects that are too large for the machine (I'll have to use Embrilliance to split the designs; no, I have no clue. Still - Singer doesn't offer other hoop sizes for the machine I have...........you are limited to the 2 that came in the box.) The Brother only came with 1 hoop (5x7), but the machine had no problem dealing with the smaller (4x4) hoop I put on it this AM - it stitched it out like it came with it. (I can't sew anything larger than 5x7 without splitting the designs, even if I add a larger hoop. The machine simply can't fathom a larger embroidery space. No biggie - most of my planned projects are in the 4x4 range, to be honest. I don't think I need a larger hoop - the repositionable one was a good price, and I was in a spending mood.)

AND! Every hoop I have has a plastic grid to aid in alignment. I have gotten used to marking my fabric, then using a ruler to try and align my mark to the center of the hoop. I don't have to do that any more!! Also, this machine tells you how long it should take to stitch out the design - which is cool, because I can plan my other projects around that - I knew not to start any complicated sewing, because I only had 13 minutes before the embroidery was done. How cool is that?

To say I am happy is an understatement. I'm going to spend some time converting all my embroidery files to .pes (from .xxx) so that I can use them on the Brother. The Singer is currently boxed up, waiting instructions from Asurian. I'm also back to browsing the embroidery sites - something I haven't done in a good long while. It was hard to get excited when I was dealing with a finicky machine.

I hope the honeymoon lasts - so far, this is great! It's such an improvement over the Singer - and no, it's not just because I am upset at the damage. 2 perfect projects, right out of the box is a big deal! I'll try to do an in-depth review in a week or 2 - or after tax season  - but as of right now, I highly recommend Brother embroidery machines.

So. Got the embroidery machine back, sans power cord, on Tuesday. I ordered a replacement from Amazon (after calling Asurian back...:sigh:); got it Wednesday. Called Asurian back on Wednesday, since no one had called me back....they told me that "there was no cord in the box when you sent it to us." Um.....no. There WAS a cord, because how else could they turn it on to try to fix it? I didn't assume they'd have a power cord compatible with an embroidery machine.....:bangs head:

Anyway. Didn't have to work today, so I headed to the Studio at 7:30 to start work on the husband's (secret) birthday gift. Decided to test the machine on cotton, instead of fleece, so hooped up fabric for a new holster bag - I wanted to test the embroidery file for the husband's present. It turned on just fine, the hoop moved into position, I threaded it up, went to thread the needle.....and the needle is Down.

OK. I went to turn the hand wheel...and the bloody thing is STUCK. It will NOT budge, no matter what I (or Himself) attempted. Asurian has broken my machine. They BLOODY BROKE MY MACHINE.

Himself offered another loan, so we headed out to the only store within 60 miles that carries Brother machines (as an authorized dealer, I mean). I've been looking at the PE-800 for a bit, so that's what I asked about.

"Oh. We don't carry....THAT model. That's ENTRY-Level. Most people get them, then trade them in. :sniff: (No, really! There was a very audible :sniff:) I'm going to show you - THIS machine will suit you." She led us to the Brother Innov-is NQ1600E.....and dropped the "We don't sell it for MSRP, we sell it for $2600. It's a *little* over your budget...." (I had made the mistake of telling her my budget was $1500. Thing is, the PE-800 is $599 on Amazon........keep this in mind, OK?)

"Um." I said. "I like the larger hoop, but I do NOT NEED TO SPEND $2600 on a machine." ~pause~ "Oh." she said. "Well, the closest thing we have to the PE-800 is the Innov-is NS-1150E. Let me get Our price for you!"

While she was walking off, I grabbed my phone, went to Brother's website, and did a comparison. Oh, look - the 1150e is almost the EXACT same model as the PE800.....it has 1 or 2 things that I DO NOT NEED OR WANT that the PE800 doesn't.....

Himself checked in, to make sure I wasn't going to bite. "No," I said. "Unless they offer me a price comparable to Amazon's....." The lady came back. "This is the lowest we can go. Now, understand, this includes the option to take classes and Floriani software -"

"Classes won't do me any good - we live 60 miles away. I have Embrilliance, so don't want or need any other software."

"Um." She said. "Let me go see something...."

At this point, the kids and I are plotting our escape. We should have moved faster. "OK. THIS is the lowest we can go for the 1150e....$1200."

"I need to think about this.......are you open tomorrow? Good. I'll go home and think......" and we fled into the parking lot.

Here's the thing. I DID go into the store with the intention of leaving with a machine in hand. I would PREFER to buy locally. However........when someone comes in with a product (and price!) in mind, that means that that's what they *want*. Do NOT try to force them to buy something more than 4x that price, even if their budget is more than that price, and certainly don't try to sell them a rebranded model at 2x the price.

If she had said, "oh, we don't carry that model - most people find they outgrow it too quickly - but I'll be happy to order it for you! Or maybe you'd like to see our lowest-end model - I think you'll probably outgrow it, too, but it's close to what you are looking for, and we have it in stock now, and - since you don't need the extras we offer, I can get the price down to almost what you found the other model for." - I would have walked out the door WITH a machine, or a receipt from her ordering in the one I wanted.

PLUS, she would have made a sale of thread/stabilizer/bobbins, because I am all about stocking up.

Instead, she lost a sale, and a customer. When we got home, I called a dealer I found online. Unfortunately, Brother won't allow them to sell to someone who is in another dealer's area.....so I went to Amazon and ordered the "entry level, will outgrow it soon" model (it'll be delivered on Monday - gotta love Prime!)

Brother lost the chance to upsell me, all because of a very pushy sales lady and a - quite frankly! - stupid policy. See, I'd looked at both of the more expensive machines online last night (because honestly? I'd already decided to trade in the Singer on a Brother, and had just about decided to go with the 1600e - I had found it online for $1600 (but I can't find the site again. Oh, well!) We will NOT be going back to that dealer, and since I gave her the home phone number, I won't be talking to them, either (we don't answer the home phone. She wanted a number, she got a number. It's just not one I use.)

The new plan is to get Asurian to fix the Singer, then I'll either sell it on CL, or go take it to my favorite sewing machine repair man and see what he'll give me for it. That money will be spent on thread and stabilizer.

:sigh: Instead of embroidering this weekend, I'll be sewing up what I can. Wednesday I'm off again, so I'll put the Brother thru it's paces - hopefully it'll live up to it's reputation!

At least I have some sewing to do - I have the husband's gift, and a hoodie for me (Himself wants to go to see Sonic again, and wants me in a matching hoodie. So, I get to have an Amy hoodie.), then I have to hit pants and under things, none of which require embroidery. Wednesday I'll pick up where I left off today, and see how it does.

but they left the stupid POWER CORD out of the box! I have no way to use it, let alone TEST it to see if it actually works. :bangs head:

I am *this close* to heading to Amazon and replacing the bloody thing......then when I get the cord trying to sell this one. I am SO tired of dealing with Asurion.......:big sigh:

Oh well. I am waiting on the customer service department to call me back........

We went to see the Sonic movie Saturday - it was fun. I still hate Jim Carey with a passion, but he actually fit the part. I enjoyed it enough that I am willing to go and see it in the theatre *again*, which is rare.

My Studio is almost presentable! I have the ironing station built and set up. It's nice - I can iron full widths of fabric at one time now - no more doing it by halves! I also bought a clothes rack - it's great! I can hang up my cosplays and works-in-progress now, and not take up valuable sitting space!

Tax season is upon us...........fun times!

Because.....I am no longer with loom. !!!! I posted it on CL on Monday, got a nibble Tuesday (but he never came back after I responded), updated the listing Thursday (added a BUNCH of stuff, and raised the price a little bit)....and yesterday. Yesterday a very nice lady contacted me, we emailed back and forth, and she paypal'd me the money after lunch. They are coming up to pick it up next Saturday. !!!!!

I am....well, sad. This is the end of an era for me. I'm also happy, because this is an awesome loom that deserves to be used and loved - and this weaver has been wanting *this* model of loom for a while. (Like me!) I'm glad - she got a really good deal, I got a fair price, and I will be able to move on now, without being depressed every time I look at the loom, sitting forlornly on the other side of the studio. (I'll stop with the dramatics now, I promise!)

I'm going to take it apart today, label the various extras, and start planning on the reorganization. I'm not going to fill up the space - honest! - but I am going to hack an Ikea kallax into a pressing station and get rid of the ironing board. The dress forms will be moved over on that side, and I'll rearrange the furniture.

So. That's a huge blessing for me - and I know someone else out there had to be praying. Thanks! :hugs:

In other news, Friday we headed out to hit the fabric outlets in Dallas. Last November a tornado had gone thru - according to everything I found online, the stores were "slightly" damaged.....yeah. Not so much - 2 of our favorites are...well, basically gone. The one with the awesome denim prices is half demolished (but I found out yesterday they've moved temporarily down the street...would have been nice to know that Friday, but that's on me). The one next door, owned by the.....um.......slightly overbearing but kinda endearing gentleman is totaled. He just opened an etsy shop mid-January, so we can continue to shop with him, but it's kinda...sad. He had the best button collection! And interesting fabrics - online isn't quite the same.

The largest store is still there, untouched. They have great prices on silk - but we weren't there for silk. Their clearance room has great prices, but.....the selection is a bit weird. Still, I scored 10 yards of knit fabric (5 green, 5 blue) for $0.99/yard, and Herself got some nice...I don't know what it actually is, but it looks like a silk noil for $1.99/yard. Among other things...she made out like a bandit, I spent $10.

I think that brings us up to date. I need to head to the Studio to start packing up the loom and all it's accessories, and to try to organize some of the fabric. Tomorrow is grocery day...then it's on to Tax Season. Fun stuff!

Let's see. The Jeep has been acting up lately - it'll try to start, then "hang" and shake. We took it in last month, but of course the minute we got there, she straightened up and refused to show the mechanic what she was doing. She'd been running normally....until yesterday.

Yesterday we were at Thrallmart picking up bubble wrap*. I got back in, turned the key....and she did her thing. 10 or 12 times. She finally started, so Himself and I took her straight to the garage....where she promptly started like a good girl. :bangs head: We tried...for 30 minutes, but she was a perfect little angel. The owner told me I could leave her.....I didn't want to walk home, so I made an appointment to drop her off on Saturday. We got back in....and she acted up. Himself ran in, the owner came out, and she demonstrated. And totally confused all 3 mechanics, because it wasn't the starter - it was getting power. It wasn't the fuel pump, because it showered the guy lucky enough to check. They gave me a soccer mom van, and told me that they'd look at her.

I just picked her up....she wanted new spark plugs. :bangs head: At least it wasn't an expensive fix!

*We needed bubble wrap, because I had to send my embroidery machine in. Saturday I sat down to do a pair of eyes on a new hoodie. It did half of the first eye, and died. The icon said "overheat". OK. I let it sit for 10 minutes after the icon went away, and started it back up. 5 stitches later, same icon. Waited again for 10 minutes, wash, rinse repeat. I did a hard reboot (i.e. I turned it off, counted to 10, and turned it back on again.) Same thing.

Sunday morning, I tried again. This time it made it 10 stitches before dying. :sigh:

Fortunately, I had purchased the 3 year Protection Plan. Since I bought it 8/1/17.....Asurion kicked in. And promptly rejected my claim. I called in Monday AM and a supervisor approved it. I sent in the paperwork...and gee, because I used my cell number instead of the home number, it got kicked out. Again. Called back, got it straightened out, then got an email telling me to box it up and send it in for repairs. Sure. I hooped up the stabilizer, fleece, and water soluble on the other half of the unfinished piece, made sure there was a bobbin in the machine and thread on top, then wrapped the entire thing in almost 200' of bubble wrap. I did NOT include the USB stick, so....they'll have to figure it out. (They told me NOT to include any peripherals. I'm not really sure HOW they think they can recreate the problem without that specific file - I did try, on Sunday, to use quilting cotton and 1 of the pre-installed files. It died, started up, died, started up, and actually got 1/4 of the way thru before I stopped it and re-attached the hoodie.......where it promptly died after 2 stitches. :sigh: It's NOT the fabric - this is hoodie #4, in a row, using the same combo. Same thread in both bobbin and spool, too. And a new needle. And eye #3 of this file....so....I dunno what's going on.)

I'm kinda hoping they say Nope! Refund! because I'd kinda like to downgrade to a Brother. They have better reviews - but I'll be happy with a working machine. I'd like to get that hoodie out of the Studio....I have plans for other embellishments, now that I'm kinda, sorta, over my intimidation.

Also, in other news, the husband called me today, said his former boss (the electrician) called and offered him a job, what did I think? He already knew......so he said he's turning in his 2 weeks notice tonight. Yeah, we'll see. I hope he goes thru with it....I hate this job.

Oh! I listed my loom and all it's flotsam and jetsam. :sigh: The kids convinced me that if I can't weave (nope. Can't. Tried. Cried.) there's no reason to keep the books, yarn, warping reel, bobbin winder, bobbins, shuttles....:sigh: I AM keeping most of my handmade Bluster Bay shuttles, though - I just can't get rid of them. They were all custom made to order for me, most out of paduak, and BB is out of business now. :sob: I've had one nibble, but no one's wanted to come look, yet. I hope someone does - this loom needs to be used and loved!

Herself has a dress all cut out. We've done a muslin of the bodice, and it looks like it fits (maybe a titch big, but that can be easily fixed.) - she's excited and already planning her next 20+. :eye roll: I'm glad she's gung-ho, but......I'm tired of hearing all the plans. Aspie's get *intense*, yo.

Figured I should show you what I've been working on since Hanukkah - it's quite a bit! I'm limited in what I can accomplish each day - 4 hours is my maximum, and that leaves me sore and achy for a couple of days. :sigh: I'm trying to push through, which...isn't really a good idea, but I don't know what else to do. I can't take anything for pain - allergies are *great*, aren't they? - and I don't want to just STOP, y'know? Anyway - onwards!

To be nice, I'll put them behind a cut.

Make with the clicky for photos! )

This year has started with a bang. Himself asked for a hoodie for an upcoming (2/14) movie, so I got on the ball and have a "blue blur" hoodie almost finished. Pics when done - right now, it just looks sad. The fabric is on order for the yellow sidekick - Herself said she'd gladly wear it.

The order from Yourfleece.com came in - it's GREAT. Mid-weight fleece - that is in local stores for $9.00+/yard! - for $3.75/yard, with free shipping if over $36. It sews up nicely, with very little curl. I don't know how it'll wear, but from what I've seen so far, it's a winner.

I have 2 hoodies to do for me (Eevee and a shiny Charizard - why not? They're cute, fun, and not difficult to sew - might as well have some fun!), and 1 for Herself (Toy Bonnie. I'm thinking Birthday prezzie, here.) I need to find a source for decent, inexpensive sweatshirt fabric (in brown.) for a kigurumi (Eevee, again). I need something warm and casual for lounging around the house.

No resolutions this year. I am going to try to sew up as much of the backlog of fabric as I can, to help clean up my Studio. I'm working on decluttering the house - baby steps. I have to take it slow, because of my wrist (I spent too long in the Studio yesterday, and I'm feeling it this morning. :sigh: Still - need to get it done! Might skip today......we'll see.)

We survived the storms Friday evening, Thank G-d! We're still wet, but that's not too bad. The sirens went off, but everything missed us - it's the first time I've heard sirens out here. G-d is Good!
fiberaddict: (Default)
This year, that is. 1/2/20, Mom went to the ER - it wasn't serious, Praise G-d! - with a stomach virus and possible pneumonia. I came home with a cough that is trying very very hard to become an upper respiratory thing. :sigh: Fun times!

Ah, well. In better news, Herself has decided she MUST! sew herself a new wardrobe. She's decided she's really into the Japanese Lolita style (think...living doll, with a serious Victorian vibe. VERY modest - skirts are at least knee length, and very little skin.) - we spent way too much $$ at Hobby Lobby on fabric and ribbons. Still.....SHE'S going to sew, so I won't complain. To be fair, I'm leaning towards the Japanese mori-look, myself (a slightly tighter fitting Lagenlook......basically, layers. Loose-fitting tops over slim pants, or a dress over a skirt.), so I really have no room to talk. I just need to find the energy to actually sew.....:sigh:

Himself has requested a long-sleeved PLAID shirt. Huzzah! and OhNo! He's also requested (!!!) a Sonic (!!!!) Hoodie(!!!!!!!), to be worn to the upcoming movie. I can do that! I found a shop online with fleece at what I consider a decent price (your fleece.com; 12 yards of non-pill fleece for $45 total. That's a LOT less than I can get it locally!) - it should arrive Friday, so...we'll see. Here's hoping the quality is decent!

Also, Himself bought Herself a Charizard kirugumi for Hanukkah. Basically, an adult-sized, character-themed onesie. It was.......more $$$ than *I* would spend, but a) Hanukkah, and b) it was part of a buy 2, get 1 free sale. Upon seeing how comfortable it was.....I went hunting for a pattern. Cutsew.com has them......I'm not thrilled with them at the moment. Their patterns are $20, but you have to download the instructions - they don't come with the printed pattern. :grumble: I've printed them out (I don't use my iPad in the sewing studio - I prefer paper, so I can make notes), now we wait for the printed pattern to come. I'm thinking I need to get some sweatshirt fabric....we'll see. Need to decide on what, exactly, I want to theme it as. (Why yes, I DO need a onesie. For days like today, when all I want to do is sleep. The rest of the family won't be able to con me into leaving the house if I'm in a silly onesie, now will they?)

Not much else is going on. I was hit with a massive "Must Clean All the Things!" bug the last of December....my kitchen has been decluttered and reorganized, and I've started on the breakfast area. Herself has started organizing her Studio, and Himself, not to be outdone, has been working on his shelves. I hope THIS bug hangs around - I'd like to get the rest of the house decluttered, but this chest bug has kinda slowed me down. :sigh:

:sigh: I am going to try to type this correctly, with capitals and everything, in an attempt to rehab my hand. Plus, it'll take longer, so I can edit my thoughts so you don't get a rage-dump.

The ONLY reason I went to see that sorry excuse of a movie is because my son *asked* me to go. He even paid for the tickets, and as an apology after, he paid for lunch. (For the record, he wasn't happy when we left the theatre. This kid - this kid LOVES Star Wars. He argued with me for a year and a half over why I was *wrong* about TLJ........this movie? I saw his heart break. He struggled to find positive things to say on the way home. My advice?

Save your money - skip this.

There WILL be spoilers ahead. I am going to put in a cut, but in case the cut doesn't work, I'll scroll down a bit.

You have been warned. Spoilers ahead. Read at your own risk. )

so. the kids and i talked earlier this week - they are my chore buddies, and i value their opinions - and we have decided to *not* breed any does this year. no kids, therefore, no milking.

this means, of course, no fresh milk for us. it also means, of course, i don't have to try and hand-milk 4 does. machine-milking is out, for now, because i can't hook up 2 inflations at once right now. we've done 1 at a time in the past...it's not fun, because the does tend to get antsy when only 1 side is being milked, and dance when you try to attach the other inflation. honestly - it's faster to hand-milk 4 or fewer goats than it is to machine-milk them. the actual milking goes faster on the machine, yes - but then you have to haul water to *clean* the machine. that's not an option for me, right now, so - i take a year off, try to strengthen my hand and wrist, and try to regain some range-of-motion.

soap-making *will* happen, but i'll buy the milk.

i'm also seriously thinking about down-sizing my loom. i'm not ready to give up weaving, not yet, and i'm not using the full width of my current loom anyway. honestly - i haven't woven much this past year or so, anyway; i've been more focused on sewing. i just.....i'm not ready to *not* call myself a weaver. i need to sit down and see how painful/difficult weaving is before i make any solid decision - but at the moment i think down-sizing is the right thing to do. maybe. i love this loom.........we'll see.

i'm currently in full declutter mode, for some reason. the kitchen was done yesterday - got rid of 2 trash bags of stuff that, while usable, isn't donate-able (i'll use broken/faded/not fully-functionable things, but i won't give them to people.) today is an ikea run to get a few organizers to finish the drawers, then i'll start on the cookbooks. i have SO many cookbooks! i need to weed them, then go thru the other bookshelves and make a run to the used book shop. they'll give me credit - yes, more books, but less than half of what i brought it, so it's still a win. then i'll start on the family room.....

herself is doing a major overhaul of her studio space. 10 trash bags so far, and she's just started. the goal is to get her space clean and set up so i can get my dining room back. himself is working on his room - guess my mood is infectious! hope there's no vaccine for it - this really needs to be done.

i've got herself's Hanukkah present started - a scorbunny hoodie. pattern is by choly knight - she's awesome. her patterns are well-written, go together pretty easily, and she has "hacking" packs for some of them to customize them. the hoodie pattern was already traced off (herself made her Bakugo hoodie from it), so all i had to do was print 2 copies of the scorbunny add-ons and cut them out. i have all the small parts cut out of the fabric, just need to cut the back, front and sleeves then i can start assembling it. i'm working on a scarf for himself - it's not the one i started back in june; this one is a simple 3-cable one. it's taking me ages - i started this back in october. i can only knit 2 or 3 rows at a time...but it'll get done eventually. then hopefully i can go back to his "real" scarf........:sigh: (he saw fox paws and got intrigued. i got him to give me the 5 colors, i ordered yarn, and cast on. i got almost to the end of the first repeat when the dog nation attacked .....i can't do the 5 stitch-decrease or the multiple increases right now. hopefully soon.....

good news is - the bone is healed.

bad news is - this is as good as it's going to get, since I can't afford to do anything else.

according to him, there's no reason I should be in pain, and i should have a *lot* more range of motion than I have. his recommendation: CT scan, followed by MRI and possible surgery.

problem: i am, for all intents and purposes, uninsured. (why no, my husband *hasn't* tried to cancel my insurance, nor has he seriously tried looking for another job. *I* am not that important to him - i've known it for years, i've accepted it - seriously, guys, it is what it is. if *he* were the one impacted by this (well, he is, financially, but that doesn't seem to matter, his whining about how broke he is notwithstanding...), things would be different. because it's me, not him - it's not a big deal. :sigh: again - this is nothing new. case in point - we still have suki, and i am forced to sleep in the same bed with her every. single. night. it really isn't worth anyone getting pissed off about - i am plenty pissed off, but it doesn't make a difference.)

I am trying to find ways to adapt. i used some of my birthday money to buy a cheap ($35!) stand mixer for my lotions; i'm trying to figure out ways to make soap. knitting....i can only do 2 or 3 rows per day, which sucks, but at least i'm knitting. weaving......is out. maybe a fly-shuttle would help - i need to see if i can rig up something. spinning - right out. i can't flip my hand over to control the twist. when i switch hands - right controlling twist, left holding fiber - i can't control how much fiber is being spun.

sewing. :sigh: i have to sew in very small chunks. 1 day to trace the pattern, then cut out the pattern the next. layout on fabric 1 day, the next to cut the fabric. then i start to sew, but i am only good for about 1 hour - 2 max, before it gets too painful. i can't power thru the pain (well, i *can*, but....) because then i'm worthless for 2 or 3 days to recover. a simple shirt for himself, for example, should take 4 - 6 hours. now, it takes 3 weeks.

i'll get used to it. or i give up all my hobbies, which i am not willing to do.

boy, that's a downer - let me try to turn this post around. last week, himself used the last of his inheritance to replace my dishwasher. the husband forced me into a bosch 5+ years ago; i have hated that thing for 5+ years. i honestly don't know what people see in them - it's small, it doesn't do a good job on the dishes (we routinely have to run 2 or 3 cycles per load to get the glassware clean).......seriously. i had much cleaner dishes with my cheap, bottom-of-the-line kenmore.

anyway, himself bought a nice kitchen aid. it should be delivered tomorrow - i can't wait. the saleslady said they get no repair calls on kitchen aid, a few on the Frigidaire, and a *ton* on bosch - which they don't carry because of all the problems. (i try to go to the small, family-owned appliance store in the next town over. i get better service, and honest opinions on the models they sell and service. they kept my maytag washer going longer than i anticipated, then happily sold me my beloved speed queen. when my dryer finally died earlier this year, herself bought me the matching speed queen dryer - it has no bells or whistles. all it does is dry my clothes in 1 cycle. bliss!)

oh! himself convinced me to pick up a copy of jedi: fallen order; the manager at our game stop talked me into using my points to purchase it...so basically i got the game free. i am trying to play a little bit every day - i can convince myself it's rehab for my wrist. I've been playing since the day it came out, and am almost halfway done. it's been fun......i can't play more than 1 hour per day (pain!), but it's fun. except for the spiders.....stupid, scary, oversized, nightmare inducing spiders.......:shudder:

And - I'm DONE. In fact, the husband is - no shit! - about to quit his job over this. :sigh:

So. Our enrollment period was 9/1/19 - 9/25/19. I wanted to stay with the plan we had, so we a)didn't have to DO anything and b)already knew what we were dealing with.

Nope - that plan is no longer offered in our area/by the employer. OK then. We stuck with Cigna (yup - calling the b*****ds out), because I *thought* our new plan would AT LEAST offer what we had. Boy, was I WRONG.

(As a quick aside - I was chosen BY CIGNA for a focus group, which was held 11/5/19. In it, we were shown a "fake" email discussing "local networks". I flipped out, said it was a HORRIBLE idea, and if I had gotten said email I would have dropped Cigna like a hot potato and run fleeing into the dark. I was told by the moderator - "oh, no, no - this isn't a thing. It's just a mock-up." Keep this in mind, OK?)

Monday I got a bill from my lovely hand specialist. I owed $110. AFTER my copay of $60. Cigna paid $29. I was incensed - what in the hell was going on? So I called......only to be told that my doctor, who IS with Cigna, who hasn't changed ANYTHING on his end at all, is no longer in MY network.

See, he's outside the limits placed upon me by my zip code. So - he's out of network, and they will pay 40% AFTER I meet my new deductible of $1500.

:sigh: Self-pay will cost me $199 for the visit in October and the upcoming one in December. Cigna will happily charge me $700/month + $170 PER VISIT.

So - go on, tell me again that I must keep this piece of shit insurance. Go on - tell me how much I will SAVE in the long run by paying $8,400 in premiums, $1,500 (per person, NO family cap!) deductible (even if it's an accident carry-forward - they don't give a shit, just pay up!), PLUS $170 per visit. (Let's see...6 visits @ $170/each, plus the previous.......$10,920. NOT including any surgery or extra visits. Cash pay = $1,200 for the same 6 visits. Um........anyone see a problem here????) Please note I only included 1 deductible - even though it's quite possible that you have to pay *2* of them, depending on the timing of your accidents. :shakes head"

It really isn't going to matter, though - husband has already told me that he's DONE dealing with the crap at work and this POS insurance. HR will NOT drop me - he is forced to keep me on, even though we CAN NOT AFFORD TO USE IT - so, he wants to quit. I told him go ahead - we'll figure something out.

And for the record - his gross pay is $30K. Think about that, if you will. Approximately $5,500 comes out for withholding/FICA. Subtract the insurance premiums from the remaining, and he has a NET income - or, for the accounting-challenged, Take Home Pay of - wait for it - $16,100.

We can live on that without too much difficulty. (No, seriously. NO credit cards, no splurges.) But not when you add in the lack of coverage by Cigna.

Oh, and telling me to "find someone in your network".....yeah. I live in a rural area. There are 2 doctors' offices in town, neither of which are....er......very competent. We have *1* orthopedic doctor who believes that x-rays can't see thru swollen tissue (so tell me why, exactly, you want to hit me with a dose of radiation if it's not going to show anything useful? Seriously.....) The hospital is best avoided - the ONLY reason I went there with the bite is because I had bled through a dishtowel in under 40 feet and was afraid I wouldn't make it to Dallas (60 miles away. For the closest *decent* hospital.) This hospital doesn't deliver babies any more, because there are NO OB/GYNs within 40 miles. The closest nephrologist (for Herself's thyroid condition) is approximately 35 miles away - pretty sure that's not in-network, either (good thing she's got her own insurance that doesn't care how far she has to drive to get to a doctor) - not that it's a GOOD nephrologist. :sigh: Same for Himself's allergy doctor. There's not a lot of choice here, doctor-wise - which hasn't been a problem up until now. (And the orthopedic doctor? Isn't a specialist, and I really don't feel comfortable with a non-specialist looking at my HAND, y'know? I kinda need my hands........although at this point, it's moot. Can't afford surgery, so I guess it doesn't matter.)

I love it here. I love the peace, the land, the livestock, the fact that my closest neighbors on one side are COWS. I do NOT like living close to people. I hate crowds - and traffic! Ugh! I don't think it's fair that I am penalized by an insurance company I am forced to pay, just because I like living with less pollution.

Ah, well. I will muddle along, like I always do. I need to try a few different knitting techniques, because the lack of a sock in tow is starting to wear on me. Knitting keeps me sane, and keeps me from smacking people with a clue-by-four when they are being especially dense. :sigh:

So. Y'all know the story - dog bite 7/24, ER didn't do their damn jobs yada yada. Our insurance plan changed 10/1 - we had no choice in the matter. Now, my doctor - who still takes Cigna, you understand, and - again! - we had NO CHOICE in whether or not we were going to change plans or not - is no longer "In Network", so Cigna covers 60%, AFTER I meet the NEW deductible.

To recap: I had an accident 7/24/19. I met the damned deductible inn the ER visit on the same damn day. On 10/1/19, our plan changed - again, no choice in the matter - and a) I have to meet ANOTHER $1,500 deductible, b)my doctor - who hasn't changed ANYTHING on his end - is now OUT OF NETWORK, meaning I have to pay $99 out of his $111 visit charge.

Tell me again how this insurance is worth anything?????

EVERY other policy I have had in my life rolled over the deductible if it was an on-going (not chronic, of course) thing. This - I can't even.

Looks like I get to live with an unhealing, broken arm for....well, however long it takes for the bloody thing to heal. I can't afford to go back to the doctor, with OR without insurance, so guess that's that, then.

And NO - socialized/single payer is NOT the answer. 1 - it's not free, doctors/nurses/their suppliers have to be paid somehow, and where do you think that money will come from? and 2 - do you REALLY trust the government to run healthcare correctly? (Ummmm...think $250,000 hammers. Seriously - you want those bozos in charge of YOUR health?)

Sorry - I just had to vent. Now I'm going to go bash my head against a wall for a bit - and then cancel my 12/13 doctor appointment. There's really no point in keeping it if I can't afford to actually DO anything (since doc's already said surgery is the next step, IF I am still in pain (yup!) and if the bone isn't healing (don't know, but since it's swollen and squishy, I'm thinking it isn't, or it's healing very slowly. Either way, I can't afford to do anything, so.....why bother?)

1. lizard habitat is still not done. to be fair, it was raining friday, then saturday it looked like rain. brother and niece came out to play with lizards; we talked a lot and watched detective pikachu. fun times! i did start the hammock stands for the new habitat - so at least i did *something* for the lizards.

2. wrist - same. oh well.

3. sewing - working on laptop case for cynthia. i just need to assemble it today; it looks good. i found some cute owl fabric for the exterior - hope she likes it!

4. husband. has suddenly realized that this job sucks. doesn't pay well, hours are stupid.......but he is still *not* doing anything about it. :sigh: he had to borrow the kids' savings to pay for a water leak repair at his house......and he suddenly realized that taxes are, in fact, due *every* year. no, really? :bangs head: my small savings took a hit friday - we had eye exams and 2 of us needed new glasses. i had hoped i'd get my last contract check...but no. ah, well.....when i do, it'll go back into savings. what do you do?

not much else to report. i'm backing up my air - soon as it's done i'll go out to the studio to finish the bag.

hope it doesn't rain........

finally! took me 4 hours to knit a toe, but the blasted sock is done! :happy dance:

let's see:

1. had the stand for the new reptile habitat finished and ready to move into the house (not herself's room, yet, but in the house). only.....the husband found 2 more rotten boards that need replacing (no, i did't notice them while painting. he did, when he tried to lift the bloody thing by 1 board and it broke. :sigh:) then he shattered the masonry board on the side........this just gets better and better, doesn't it?

i tried to remove the mirroring on the sliding glass doors of the cage, and failed. we did get new glass cut, but not put in yet. we also got the final boards to make the riser for the bottom (we had boards....he had 2, and i bought 2. he just didn't tell me he was using his 2 to repair the stand. :bangs head:) ah, well - it worked out better. the bottom will be out of 2 x 6's instead of 2 x 4's, which makes it slightly taller, and therefor better for the young kaiju.

updated plan: the new habitat will be ready for occupancy *next* saturday.

2. rain! we had a gully-washer come thru last night. bad, heavy rain. thank G-d we have no damage!

3. the husband got to see suki at her antics again last night. she decided riley insulted her and jumped him.....and yet, she's still here. :big sigh: is is bad of me to wish he'd been bitten? because...yeah. maybe that would force him to *do* something. :sigh:

not much else to say. i *really* need to get back to putting stuff into tap forms. knitting is pretty much done, except for my projects, but sewing? not so much. :sigh: hurts to type, but.......
fiberaddict: (Default)
so. went to the doc today about my wrist. he took x-rays.....seems the bone is NOT healing. i still have a nice gap between the 2 pieces - herself says it looks to be 3mm; i dunno. doc mentioned surgery....not fun. i go back 12/13 to see if it's gotten any better. he's concerned, since the pain hasn't decreased at all.

good news - i have more range of motion now. i think i tore scar tissue, which is why i can move it more. it's still not back to where it should be, but hey - i can move it more! we won't discuss how much it hurts, right? or the fact that it still takes me about 10 minutes per row on my sock...which is ridiculous. it took me 2.5 hours to knit half a toe. :sigh: i've got presents to knit - this is NOT good.

i still have a few exercises to do, but......they won't help the bone heal.

ah well, we'll see. i will keep plugging away at the sock that's been on the needles since JULY. (normally it takes 10 days to complete a pair of color-worked socks. this pair is plain - no pattern, no color, no texture...just knitting. :sigh:
fiberaddict: (Default)
let's see:

1: wrist worse. i fell on friday - it was wet. i was feeding the does, and my feet slipped on the panel we had on the ground to keep out of the mud. i wind-milled, then hit the ground on my hip and - yup - left wrist. felt a pop......good news is i now have almost full range of motion. bad news is i am now at an 8 on the constant pain scale. :sigh: i see the ortho on thursday. fun times!

2: sewing. i have almost completed another shirt for himself - just need him to choose buttons so i can do the buttonholes. i knocked out 2 snuggle sacks for our lizard overlords - need to rework them a bit; torhu *hates* hers. i mean, she loves the warmth, but hates being put in it. i have a few ideas.

i knocked out a laptop case for my air yesterday. i've made this pattern once before (it's the lisette laptop bag from "ithinksew"); in that case i had to enlarge it. this time, i printed it at 82%. it fits.....but i do NOT like the instructions. the designer wants you to finish the inside with bias tape to cover the exposed seams, and she does NOT use any sort of padding to protect the contents. :sigh: yes, it's a bother to sew the lining separate from the outside, then flip them inside out, but the end result is so much more clean and professional! so is adding foam........it's a huge bother, but - again! - the end result is much nicer. i need to do 1 more practice run before doing the real one - Cyn needs a case for her laptop, and this makes a nice gift.

3: speaking of lizards. last weekend we picked up a new enclosure for the young kaiju. it looks like it was originally a glass display case from a shop - it's 70"L x 20"W x 12"H. i am going to remove the mirroring from the sliding doors, build a frame base to raise it 3", then build a frame top to raise *it* 3", and add a wire top for the lights to hang from. that should make it 18" high (or close) - which gets the heat lamps and UV lamps up high enough. it came with a 3.5' stand custom made (the seller had his turtle in it), so......hopefully next week we'll be able to get it in the house.

i've already started building some fake rock climbing toys for them - you use styrofoam, sanded grout, and polycrylic sealer. (no joke. i think i've spent.....$25 on supplies, and the grout is a 25 lb bag - it'll last *forever*. fake rocks at the pet store start at $20......so, yeah. up next are a couple of hammocks (using scraps from my hawaiian shirts, i think!) and a few more rock structures.

4: himself requested i mention the Hong Kong situation. it's complicated, but people (Americans) who think that HK citizens shouldn't be punished for speaking out....are very naive. look, the only people who have a protected right to free speech are American citizens - and that only here, in America. Chinese citizens can NOT speak freely against the Chinese government - that's illegal there. i don't like it, but there it is. we, here in America, CAN speak out against it - and any American company that punishes an American citizen doing so should be taken to court. if they punish a NON-American - well, not much we can do about that, especially if they punish a Chinese citizen, in China, who breaks China's law against speaking out against the government. (the NBA needs to be legally b****-slapped into next week for kowtowing to the Chinese government, imnsho. as an American citizen, the coach has the *legally protected* right to speak his mind. granted, he was in China.....so what should have happened (imo) was that China threatened arrest, our embassy made "so sorry" noises and whisked him back home. yes, visitors in a foreign country should obey their laws........but still. the NBA could have made the right political noises to mollify China while not violating the coach's 1st amendment rights.) it's complicated......but money shouldn't be a factor in how a company treats it's people. blizzard, on the other hand, was within it's rights to punish the Chinese player at their tournament in Tokyo. i don't agree with it, but.....they were in China, it is a Chinese citizen - Chinese laws prevail. the guy has no protected right to free speech. i do NOT like it, but......it is what it is. yes, i'm sure money had a lot to do with it - but, again - the guy is Chinese, and he knew it is against the law to speak out against the Chinese government. (for the record, i think Hong Kong *should* be allowed to be sovereign. not that my opinion means much - i have no skin in that fight.)

i need to start waking up the kids, so hope you have a good one!
fiberaddict: (Default)
let's see....a lot has happened over the last..2 weeks or so. himself decided he wanted to work on cars - i think i mentioned that. he replaced my stereo (excuse me, "head unit"), then this past sunday he installed the backup camera. works a treat!

we did a run to mom's. on the way there, he started kvetching about how he was going to be bored now, and he wanted to do something with cars. the husband had talked to his dad about having himself work on his dad's vast collection of collectible bugs, but - as usual with the husband - nothing further was decided. anyway...on the way home, we passed a house with an older model jeep cherokee out front with "for sale" written on the windshield. we stopped, talked....$500. NO motor - it was blown. body in decent shape, interior in good shape - just needs a headliner. all the motor parts are there.......

i heard a goat, so i jokingly asked if they needed another one. free. they said sure! so we said we'd bring biff back after feeding. off we went to discuss.

fed the critters, packed up biff. himself and i discussed, decided ok, this was a good project car. dropped off the goat, told them we were interested, but needed to get the funds....and the husband took $100 off because we gave them a goat.

so. tuesday we ran to the bank then to their house, and himself is now the proud owner of a $400 (+ 1 goat) jeep. yes, it'll be a ton of work. yes, he's aware - but he WANTS to do this. so, he's going to start with the small stuff- replace the lights/headliner/etc, then start breaking down the engine. he's excited - this is good. very good.

only thing - it's a 5-speed. it's been 30 years since i've attempted to drive a stick......at least i have time.

today is errand day - hope you have a good one!
fiberaddict: (Default)
i have pictures! been busy, as usual - i can sew, but can't knit much. i spent most of last weekend tidying the studio - i have carpet! who knew??

let's start with my arm - these pics are about 2 weeks old, but nothing's changed. it is a *lot* better than it was when it happened, so i don't mind sharing these:

arm top

arm underside

the worst one, pain-wise, is the one at the heel of my hand. it feels raw......i still can't flip my hand over, and my range of motion is still very limited. my pain level is sitting at....3.5-ish.

next up, meet Tohru! herself has had Iroh for almost a year, now, and he was acting very mopey. we discussed it, but had decided to not get him a tank mate - females are hard to find, and putting 2 older males together isn't recommended....then the serpantarium called with an owner-surrendered female. we resided...until my brother sent a photo. :sigh:

Tohru and Iroh

she's the bigger, darker one....and according to herself, she's mine. she and Iroh are getting along, so that's good - and he's no longer mopey. (i like lizards, just hadn't really considered owning one. herself didn't want to be a multi-lizard owner, so.......*i* have a lizard.)

now, the important things: what i have been up to in the studio: shirts. for me. i wanted some classic camp-style shirts, and victoria jones #220 caught my eye. it's a traditional man's hawaiian shirt, which was the look i wanted.

hawaiian shirt green

this was the first one - fabric was from a "famous hawaiian designer" from fabric mart. this was my muslin - it fits, but not quite well enough.

hawaiian shirt birds

2nd attempt. fit is better, but not quite there. i added 1/4" to the side seams.....it made the body fit my curves better, but i wanted a little more ease. the collar is better - i didn't like the pattern instructions; too much hand-sewing. i basically used the simplicity dress shirt's directions - i like the finish the yoke-burrito gives you. fabric is from the same lot from fabric mart as #1; i have enough left to make herself a top, too.

hawaiian shirt purple

this one.......my favorite. the fabric is from hawaii - it's cotton, it's a nice mid-weight, and it is lovely. i have 2 more pieces i need to sew up.....anyway. i added 1/2" this time, instead of 1/4", and the fit is exactly what i wanted. loose, comfy, and iconic. i did move the buttons to the other side.....silly, but i wanted to emphasize it was a women's shirt. i'm not sure if the other 2 pieces will end up as this pattern, though, as herself and i went in together and bought 2 used lutterloh sets.

lutterloh shirt green

which...here's my first attempt at a lutterloh shirt for me (i made up a tank for herself, but it needs a little more work. the first book is from 1980....and i had to lower the neckline/armscyre/bust dart. i should have just lengthened the shoulder straps.......) this pattern is from the current supplement; lutterloh is interesting as you get a book of 40 tiny patterns that you have to draft to your size. it's not a perfect fit - you still have to make your normal alterations - but it's closer than commercial patterns. and cheaper - 40 patterns for $20. (if you're interested, try to find an older set - the new sets are about $130; we scored 1 set for $30 (280 patterns) and the other for $42 (280 patterns) Supplements are $20-ish.......all you really need are the supplements and the ruler. instructions are on-line - it's easy. and fun. and faster than tracing, for me.) we'll see how it fits, once i get it done.

think that gets you up-to-date....later!
fiberaddict: (Default)
so. the nerve test was yesterday......the motor nerves are fine, thank God. the sensory portion....are, sorta, barely. still - good news!

i am out of the brace.....again, sorta. doc wants me in it as much as i need it - the bone is not fully healed, and we don't want any set backs. the therapist wants me out of it. um......ok. i decided to try to only wear it when feeding critters. we'll see.

my range of motion has increased ever so slightly. i still can not flip my hand over - which is very worrisome. the therapist told me to not do the exercises if they hurt.....i hurt all the time. so.......:sigh: she didn't like that answer, but it's the truth. so now she says do them up to a 3 on the pain scale.....i decided it wasn't worth telling her breathing rates a 2 - she wouldn't have appreciated it. (yes, *breathing* hurts. i can ignore most pain under a 5/6.....but i am living with 2 right now. everyday activities? solid 5 or more. so stopping at 3? means i don't do much. i'm trying to decide how much to deal with........)

i have managed to make myself 3 hawaiian shirts (victoria jones pattern # 220. i am a medium. my 3rd shirt i added .5" to the side seams, and it fits the way i want it - i was going for a nice, slightly loose fitting camp-style shirt, and that did it. shirt #2 was .25", and it's nice, but not quite loose enough.) pics forthcoming.

himself funded and installed a new stereo in the jeep. he wants - he thinks - to work on older cars, restoring them, and figured this was a good way to start. he has a backup camera for me, but hasn't quite figured out how to route the cables. that's this weekend's project.

gotta skitter!
