It's County Fair time!!

And I've decided to enter...the only problem? They don't have a handspun division - we (the lady in charge of the entries and I) decided I need to enter under the Arts - Misc. division - and they only allow *1* entry per person per division. Hrumph.

I am going to call back tomorrow (we're kinda swamped up here - I'm sneaking this in) to verify this. I mean, I have a beautiful skein of true worsted (Romney - Yum!), some nice skeins of woolen laceweight (EE dyed BL), a *gorgeous* skein of silk, some nice skeins of tail-spun kid mohair plyed with bombex silk......so, yeah. I'd like to enter them *all*, not to win, but to get people's attention that HEY, I'm out here!

Seeing's how my demos at the library and church hasn't brought any other fiber-artists out of the woodwork. *sigh*

I am encouraged, though - they have a category for HANDWOVENS! Whee! Gotta go dig out something(s) to enter *that* category, for sure and for certain. *g* Might encourage Himself (and Herself, if she's so inclined!0 to finish up his twill scarf to enter......*g*

It's only $1 per entry, so we're not talking big bucks here......and I need the exposure. I'd rustle up some other people to enter, but the rules state you have to be a resident of the county.....blah blah blah. *sigh*

I need some local fiber-pals. I'm tired of being the "weird lady that plays with wool" all by myself.

Oh, and I finished my sock....now to wash 'em and wear 'em!

Um, I'm sure I'm stating the obvious, but are there no spinning guilds in your area? (I don't know where you are, by the way . . . )

I am also the weird lady who plays with wool, who can't seem to hook up with her local guild due to timing issues. At least there is a guild in my area, but I can't make a meeting until April due to my work schedule.

There are 2 guilds "near" me - 1 is about an hour away (depending on traffic), but the timing is horrid (widowed with 2 small kids...hard to find someone to babysit for most of a Saturday; weekdays are right out due to work).

The other guild is....about 2 hours away, if I've figured the location right. They're actually "closer" in that they cover the surrounding counties....but not *my* county. Odd, that.......

It's like I'm in the twilight zone or something. I'm not exactly quiet out here - I almost always have knitting (usually handspun) or a spindle with me; I haul my wheel out at the drop of a hat; and I've demoed at the "big" library 2 years in a row. A lot of people are interested, but I've only found 1 other spinner - and she only does it occasionally, and isn't (apparantly) interested in coming over and playing.

Ah, well - I'm working on it!

I hear ya! The Dallas guild is really too far to go out and play - it's too hard on me to play with people once a month who probably will never come out *here* to play.

The other guild covers Van Zandt, Ellis, and....Hunt counties, I think. Again, the distance is a problem.

I'm *sure* there are others out here - I just gotta catch their attention. I've got the room to host spin-ins (and I'll even lock the dogs out!), I've got toys I'll gladly share....just need the people.

I see (on the left column of your LJ page) you're a Thriller too.

Last year I hosted a spin-in and posted a call for spinners on all the spin-related Yahoo Groups I belong to. Had a huge response, and it brought a lot of folks out of the woodwork in my county. I had no idea how many spinners there were here, being new to the area, and this turned out to be a great way to meet them.

Some of the spinners who came to my spin-in even formed a committee later in the year and created our first ever county-wide fiber event, which launched in October and is going annual. Mighty oaks from little acorns grow . . .

Through a spinner I met at The Woolie Ewe I found out about a loosely organized guild in the norther suburbs (Plano, Richardson, Allen) that is calling itself the Texas Twisters. They meet one Monday a month to knit (I work), one Wednesday a month to spin (I work) and on the 5th Saturday of any month that has 5 Saturdays. The next one is in April and I have requested the day off.
