SG's stepmother died yesterday AM, so that kind of put a damper on things here. Have some photos for the moment:

as usual. I need a break from our Break, I think! Isn't that always how it goes? And this is the calm before the storm - our first doe is due 4/29.

Let's see.....I finished Herself's Biological Warfare socks (they are BRIGHT!). Washing hasn't helped - the dye didn't fade one little bit. Started the Walk thru China socks.....I have a fondness for socks that "match" activities. I can wear these when we're studying the Great Wall next year! :snicker: (OK, so I'm a little weird. Could be worse - at least it's just socks, right?)

Pesach is over at sundown.....I've lost a little over 1 pound this week. I'm sure I'll gain it back - the kids have requested donuts for breakfast.

Not much else going on......hope you have a Blessed Shabbat!
fiberaddict: (Default)
What a Blessed day! And it's raining here - which we need. :happy dance:

Sorry for the radio silence, but I've been busy. I've - you know what? I have photos. That'll take less time:

Yes, I am still alive - just busy. And tired. I have photos....on the iPad. Eventually I'll upload them - but I dyed 5 more skeins today (2 pairs of socks worth!), and need photos of them, and tomorrow I plan on dyeing up 3 more skeins. What? I have patterns I want to do soon-ish; they are all based on characters from "Firefly". 4 of today's skeins are for a Jayne Cobb sock (the hat! I matched the colors to the hat I knit SG a while back...) and Inara (a lovely burgundy/wine-color; I need some beads for her sock). Tomorrow I plan on dyeing up yarn for Wash (leafy green for "I am a Leaf on the Wind, watch me soar"), Kaylee (I'm thinking pink, for That Dress), and Malcolm (brown, maybe? He IS a Browncoat, after all.)

I'm halfway down the foot of Herself's Biohazard sock. The Florescent Yellow is BRIGHT - the black helps, sorta, but not much. You'll be able to see her feet coming from a mile away! I've got 3 pairs of socks in the queue ready to go - Yaacov, Trip up the Nile, and Walk around China, then I can start on the Firefly socks. Maybe.....I have a LOT of socks already kitted up and ready to go. (I have mentioned that 2015 is the Year of the Sock, right? Because....yeah. Socks are THE project this year.)

Zenni shipped my first order yesterday; the glasses are due here on Saturday. :happy dance: Can't wait for the sunglasses - it's already in the 70s here. Spring? What's that?

Tomorrow is doctor day for Herself...I need to get the travel sock sorted so I have something to work on while we wait. And wait - this doctor is notoriously late. That's why I have a travel sock!

Oh! SG finally finished my weaving cabinet! He moved it into the Studio last night, and I filled it up with my weaving yarns. it's almost big enough for all of them; I'm down to 1 shelf in the armoire for weaving yarns now. It's a lovely thing - and yes, I have a photo of it, too. I'll try to do photos tomorrow - but no promises.

Have spent the day re-doing the Studio. :sigh: Good News: We sold the Skutt! (God is VERY good!!) Bad News: I had to totally rearrange the Studio so Herself has space to use her kiln...and we have an electrician coming out Thursday to put in the proper plug. :ack!:

I honestly don't begrudge her 1/4 of the Studio....but. I was already out of room with just MY stuff; add her 2 kilns and all the stuff that goes with them, and....yeah. We are stuffed to the gills. I had to get rid of my sewing desk and the credenza; I bought Himself a new dresser and took his for fabric storage. Unfortunately, it's not as large as the credenza...so I have to find a way to shoe-horn in the rest of the fabric. And thread. And patterns.....I also bought a cheap plastic filing cabinet for the patterns...but it's really not suited for that. :sigh: Ah, well - we'll work it out. Somehow.

We're all at 6's and 7's right now, but it'll get organized.

And! The IRS finally deposited Herself's refund! :Thank God!!!: I'll be looking at washers tomorrow or Tuesday (we have to get the A/C serviced; hopefully tomorrow evening.). I need to know how much $$ will be left so I can see what else I can do. Glasses for Himself and me are top of the list; I need to pay our neighbor for a flatbed trailer he offered us (for $150. Not bad!), and I'd like to pick up some more soap supplies, coned yarn, and dyes. Hopefully, I can do ALL of it. : fingers crossed :

I'm exhausted (still not totally recovered from the crud), so I'm gonna go sit a bit. Oh!!!! Finished the Celtic socks - pics later. (They're drying right now) I need to assemble a CD tower (Lost the CD storage when the credenza left. :sigh:) - Laters!
fiberaddict: (Default)
so it's quiet around here. Today there's no rain, just cool and damp and muddy. :sigh: Still - not complaining! We NEED the rain - the more, the better!

Spent today dyeing wool for 3 more pairs of socks. Faded black and bronze for Theseus and the Minotaur, purple and gold for La Mancha's Giants and green and orange :snicker: for Celeigh in the crew sock version. (Why the snicker? Because Green and Orange are the colors representing the Protestants and the Catholics.....I was in a silly mood, singing Irish folk songs when I remembered this pattern, and, well......there ya go. Irish shamrock socks.) (The links are to Ravelry's database; supposedly that is viewable to EVERYONE, member or not. If you can't see them, let me know and I'll see what I can do for you.)

I turned the heel on the first Celtic Pennies sock. I.....am getting better at short-row heels, but I don't *like* them yet. Still - this year's goal is to become comfortable with different types of heels, so I'll keep trying.

Break time's over - I need to get back to the socks. Gotta get finished so I can knit something else!

Update!!!!!

The kilt hose are FINISHED. I finished them Monday afternoon - sorry for the radio silence, but I was a knitter on a mission. Pictures will be forthcoming - the hose are currently drying, and the house is mud-encrusted.

My next socks are started - Yaacov by Stephanie Van Der Linden. LOVE, love, LOVE these socks - and the pattern is easy. The yarn does all the work!

As a reward for finishing the hose, I bought a pattern - <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/theseus-and-the-minotaur>Thesus and the Minotaur I need to dye up the yarn for it....but they are COOL. (I like socks with themes.....these? I'll wear when we study Greek myths/architecture next year. Or wear to the Art Museum. Whatever.....) Yesterday was take the aunt shopping day, and call the IRS day. :sigh: I was on HOLD for 2.5 hours....talked to *2* agents, and got told that I needed to call back to talk to the 1st department AGAIN. They have NO idea why the refund hasn't hit, why there is a problem....I think they were hacked. Seriously. I've tried 18 times this AM to get thru; I got thru at 7:45, and my phone DROPPED THE CALL :bangs head: Frustration isn't even.....:arrrrrrrrrgh: Himself has requested a.....different type of History for next year. We're finishing up Modern World History; normally we'd cycle back to Ancients and go thru it again. He wants to do something on Historical Architecture. I've found a bunch of documentaries that fit, and The Teaching Company has some courses, so I'm going to try and set something up. Sounds fun! More later - I really need to keep hitting the IRS line. :sigh: ETA:. The Yaacov socks have been sent to the frog pond. The yarn is a singles, which will NOT last very long. Not on my feet, anyway. :sigh: I've ordered a sock blank so I can dye my own, and will start them again once that's done.

So....

I finished the shoelaces - they look great! and got my travel sock to the toe. It's now set down, though - because February is Kilt Hose Month. ALL Kilt Hose, ALL the time (until they are done.) I've figured out where I am on them (almost to the heel on #1), I verified that it does, in fact, FIT the boy, and I've worked a few rounds to get back in the groove. The plan is to finish #1 by Feb 10, and get #2 done by Feb......I wanna say 20, but I'll be happy if it's done by the 28th. :fingers crossed:

Started our taxes today....:ugh: I'd be finished if SG actually cared - all he has to do is go online and get his W-2 info, but he can't be arsed to do so. :sigh: Oh, well - he has plans for the left over funds, but he can't HAVE them until I file, and the longer I wait, the longer it'll take him to get his money. Not that he'll admit that - it'll be my fault we didn't get it sooner. :bangs head:

Not a lot going on here. Next week is Comic Con - can't wait! It'll be fun!....but this week is same old, same old. Guess I should go knit a bit......

Oh! We saw Big Hero 6 last week - it's a good movie. VERY good. Go see it if you can! I want to see Imitation Game, too..hopefully soon.
fiberaddict: (Default)
So, this year I am trying to document all my projects - both on Ravelry and here (because Rav is more of a notebook-type thing than a blog.) I managed to finish 2 this week:

First up, SG's Tardis socks. These are for next weekend, when we go to ComicCon. (Why yes, we ARE geeks, thank you very much! And yes, we DO like wearing geeky things in public - even if socks aren't that noticeable, we still have and wear them.)

SG's Tardis Socks

I still need to work on my short rows - these are still icky looking on the inside. I found a YouTube, so I think I've figured out what I've been doing wrong.

I also need to RINSE any blue yarns I dye much better - there's some bleeding going on. :sigh: Oh, well - live and learn, right?

I finished his socks on Sunday, and Monday I CO a hat for me....which I cast OFF yesterday. Yes, 24 hours for a hat. It helped that it was worsted weight, and an easy geometric pattern.

Turkish hat

This particular pattern is an old Middle-Eastern weaving one - I think it's called Ram's Horn. I dunno; I saw the hat pattern on my "We think you'd like..." board on Rav, and it grabbed me. So much that I BOUGHT the yarn specifically for it last week. I'm pleased with it - the colors work, it was a fun knit, and it'll make a nice addition to my hat rotation.

We still have the beagle....SUPPOSEDLY, the rescue will pick her up today. :fingers crossed: Nights are hard, because she won't sleep anywhere but on the bed with us, and Loki is a whiney-butt that thinks he'll die if HE'S not on the bed...:sigh: I had a beagle-hat all night, and a Loki knee-warmer and a Tigger foot warmer. Needless to say, I didn't get much sleep. :sigh:

Well, onward and upward! Current project is: Shoelace #2. Gotta get it done by next Friday. And today is shopping day, so I need to get ready for that. Laters!
fiberaddict: (Default)
I think. Still stuffy, sneezing all over the place (I don't usually sneeze. Right now? It's epidemic. :sigh:) Headache-y, dry, itchy eyes...but hey! I'm awake! And semi-coherent!!

I finished SG's Tardis socks last night. They're currently on the blockers drying (I always wash my hand knits when I take them off the needles - no telling what kind of gunk they have, and water makes the stitches look better.), so no pics yet. I also finished shoelace #1 and started #2 - only, it's from Season 18. It's all purples (for the "Rose" shoe....it fits, and it's STILL the Doctor's scarf, so it works, too. And I won't get bored!)

I also started a hat for me.....yeah. I'm borked. But hats are fast and useful and on larger needles than socks - and my wrists need that right now.

And apparently I have "sucker" written in Canine on my forehead. :sigh: We ran to Sonic yesterday for milkshakes (which...I didn't get. Because SG accidentally dropped mine. :bangs head:) and both of us saw a small dog almost get run over. I guess the other driver saw my panicked face and flailing arms, because he slammed on the brakes; I opened my door and said "Here baby! C'mon here!" and up this little beagle ran and hopped right in the car. She let me cuddle her for about 15 seconds, then she wriggled over to the back seat, curled up, and went to sleep. :sigh:

I took her to both vets today, and she's not chipped and neither one recognizes her. She's sweet, but she HATES our dogs. HATES them. It looks like she's a spoiled l'il girl, used to being an only child. We've called a local rescue group (they are going to try to pick her up tonight. :fingers crossed:).....she spent the night in MY bed; SG was banished to the sofa because Loki and Tigger were NOT happy with the situation. (The bed is THEIRS, you see - and she won't let any other dog get near her. She's a beagle, which means she's LOUD...so no banishment to the bathroom.) I don't think I can take much more of the Drama around here....

I need to go blow my nose again. Laters!

:bleurgh:

My sinuses decided to attempt to kill me yesterday. Out of the blue they shut down, and I can't breathe. Or smell (or taste. :sigh:) I took Benedryl last night to try and open them up.....nope. I was drugged to sleep, but couldn't breathe so kept waking up. :fun fun: I have the bed clothes in the washer now, in hopes that maybe the dogs brought something in that set this off. :sigh:

I am at the heel of sock #2. The plan was to be at the toe today....but life happened. I'll try to finish them Sunday.....

This year is our "Musical" year. We did a Great Courses Broadway course, then a couple of documentaries, and now we are watching all the musicals. I think the biggest hit - so far! - has been "Into the Woods", a re-telling of Grimm's fairy tales. TOTALLY hysterical - I hope the movie version gets at least half of it right, because if they do, it'll be funny. (But....not for young kids. Grimm's is dark, and Sondheim went to the source material for this. Kinda gory....but funny!) My favorite line was when Cinderella discovered that her husband was still fond of.....young maidens. She confronts him, and he says "Well, I was raised to be charming, not sincere!". (And they kill the narrator off - it's hysterical!)

We've seen a lot of good ones - can't wait to see what's in store! And...I need to figure out next year....because this was a definite hit with both kids. The goal was for them to appreciate musical theatre - and they do. (And they both agree that movie versions generally suck compared to the Broadway versions.)

I need to find more Kleenex, and we need to get our day started. Shabbat Shalom - and may you be able to breathe this weekend!

:sigh:

1. We had to put Bailey down yesterday - it was past time. He had started refusing food, and was totally blind. Yesterday AM, he couldn't stand up on his own, so SG finally made the call. (I had reached that point a few months ago, but was told No, it wasn't time yet. :sigh:) He had a good, long life - he was 14. For a Pyr, that's incredible - the vet even said that!

2. Finished SG's first sock. I had forgotten why I don't like knitting socks for him - nothing's ever *right*. Normally, I knit his socks on 72 stitches; for this pair I bumped it up to 80 (because color work does draw in a little...not an inch!, but a little). He claims it's TOO TIGHT (no way. No freaking way it is too tight - it slips over his heel (with a little work - you don't want them floppy!) and I can stick 2 fingers in there with his heel - and the stitches STILL have more stretch!). Then, I asked him what color he wanted the heels and toes - blue (like the rest of the sock), white, or black. He hemmed, he hawed, then said "White." OK. I start the heel (while we are OUT running errands!) and he says....."Oh. I wanted Black." :bangs head: OK...I offer to stop and switch to black when we get home...."No. White's....OK, I guess." :big sigh:

He's now in the "solid color or self-striping yarns ONLY" category.

3. Finished all the work, and will deliver it tomorrow. Client has offered lunch.....I won't say no. Since I'm doing them a favor, client offered the kids lunch too - so, we're going out tomorrow. :shudder: and

4. Oh! Almost lost a horse yesterday (because SG is a doofus.) He has suddenly gotten WAY into RC toys (don't. Just...don't ask. Because we can't afford to replace my mixer (and I found a replacement IN STOCK locally for 1/4 the regular price!!!!!), but we certainly can afford a RC drone, a Universal controller (that cost $19 LESS than my mixer......:grrrrr:), parts for a "free" plane, more batteries, more parts...honestly? We could have bought my mixer AT FULL PRICE and still not spent what he's spent on toys......nevermind me. I'm a little over-wrought right now.) - anyway.

Yesterday he was off. He decides to go INTO the horse pasture (mistake #1), WITH the girls (mistake #2) and attempt to fly his plane (mistake #3). Which he crashes into the tree. Which freaked out the girls (of course)...and Denara freaked out and tried to jump the fence....only her back leg got tangled in the wire and down she went, all tangled. :freak out:

Himself and I ran down there, thinking she was gone, because she wasn't moving. I saw her head twitch, which was a relief, so I threw myself on her neck (if you immobilize a horse's neck, they won't panic as much when you try to help them) while Himself tried to free her. A few minutes and some bolt cutters later, she was free, I was covered in mud, and the fence had been taken down. Fun times! (No, SG hasn't learned - he's in the shop now trying to get the plane back working, so he can do it again. :bangs head:)

I think that's all......for the moment. I need to CO the 2nd sock...I want to get this pair done so I can start a hat for me for the barn. Then it's all kilt hose, all the time until that pair is done......

Progress!

I, um...finished a pair of color-worked socks in..um....8 days. That's a personal record for me - and when you realize that I kept up with my walking/teaching/cooking/Mom-ing, that's pretty...pretty good.

2015 Hieroglyphic socks right

2015 hieroglyphic socks left

I don't like the way the heels look - there's a noticeable line of decreases on both, and they are a little square-looking. The toes...are squatty, because I had to compress the decreases (the foot pattern came out longer than the pattern said.) - but you can't tell when the socks are on a foot.

Overall, I'm pleased with them. Next time I'd use a brighter contrast color - but this IS what I had in mind when I dyed the yarn. Sort of an old, dirty, dusty thing - and it works.

I've already CO the next pair - Tardis socks for SG. We'll see how long *they* take......

Shabbat Shalom! See ya on the flip side!!
fiberaddict: (Default)
33* and pouring rain for morning stables. :brrrrrrrr: Still, the fire is nice and toasty, so....

Almost done with the toe of sock #1. Will start sock #2 after, because I want to push and get these DONE so I can whip out a pair for SG. Then it's kilt hose month!

I also started a geek project. A while back, I had the idea of weaving a pair of Dr. Who shoelaces for Comic Con. Found a 4th Doctor Scarf pattern, matched the colors with embroidery floss, and started figuring out how to best warp my inkle loom so I could get them done.

Weaving...didn't work. I tried 4 times - with 3 types of warp (the last being sewing thread). Inkle looms are made to weave warp-faced fabric (this means that the face of the cloth is the long threads that run length-wise.); for these I need WEFT-faced fabric (the weft is the thread that runs width-wise in the fabric; usually carried by a shuttle. Most clothing fabric is balanced - you see both warp and weft. Navajo rugs/tapestries are weft-faced. ) I tinkered with my loom, using fine-toothed combs to separate the warp, and started weaving....but my bands looked BAD. :sigh: Either balanced (which means I had white "dots" in the colored areas) or weft-faced but with horrible selvedges.

So, I started thinking. I have a French Knitter/Spool knitter/Knitting Nancy (basically a tube with prongs on top)...but the spacing was for large yarn - it was too loose with the embroidery floss. We were out running errands (I got a pair of antique sock blockers for photos - SG is planning to refinish them hopefully today!), so I picked up a new one with smaller spacing...but it was still to loose. :sigh:

After rummaging around in the Studio, I found a hollow wooden tube (NO IDEA what it belongs to/where it came from!), so grabbed some finishing nails and made my own.

It works Perfectly! I have about 1 foot of shoelace done......I'll work on it again after getting sock #2 started. :bounce: Dr. Who Scarf shoelaces - too fun! Judging from what I've got done, I think the scarf pattern will need to be split in half (the scarf is over 10 feet long IRL), with half on one shoe and half on the other. We'll see.

My shoes were shipped out on Thursday, so this'll be fun. Comic Con is the first weekend in February - the reason I'm so geeked? Guests include: Billie Piper (Rose), John Barrowman (Capt. Jack Harkness!), and - EEEEK!!! - Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor, of the SCARF.) :bounce: (Also scheduled are Jadzeea Dax (DS9), the Holographic Doctor (Voyager) and Ti'ilk (Stargate). Among others). I don't know that we're going to try for autographs - but we'll be able to see them. And I'll have a nod to the 4th Doctor with my shoelaces, and Rose and Ten with my shoes. Should be fun!

Guess I should get back to knitting. Football today...fun, fun. :sigh:
fiberaddict: (Firefly: Josh Whedon)
because it's still cold, and we're not doing much around here except feeding the fire, bringing in more wood, and shivering. This is Texas - we do Heat, NOT Cold!

I'm trying to do better, photo-wise, so here's a progress shot of the current sock in progress:

Pharaoh's Socks in Progress

These are Heatherly Walker's Hieroglyphic Socks - she studied to be an Egyptologist for a while; the socks say "Knitting Socks". :snicker:

The heel is a new one to me - it's a Boomerang Heel. I tried it on yesterday - it fits, and seems to fit well....we'll see. It wasn't hard to execute (well, once I figured out there was a mistake, and figured out how to rip back without losing the wraps at my turning points. THAT was a nightmare I don't want to repeat!), and - when blocked - looks nice. We'll see how I feel about it once I start wearing these.

Not much else to report - we're pretty much staying home due to the cold. We're all pretty much over the stuffiness, finally, so that's a plus.

Shabbat Shalom!
fiberaddict: (Calvin: Faces)
but wool is so delightful! We've got no place to go...let it snow 'cause I have photos of woolies! (OK, so it doesn't really scan. It's cold, so cut me a little slack.)

I have PHOTOS! for you! I'll put them behind a cut...because I have a lot of catching up to do! Click for photos! )

I finally finished the birds COMPLETELY last night. The embroidery.....Oi! About 6 hours worth, all told - but it's definitely worth it!

Here's one side:

Firebirds right

And the other:

Firebirds left

They've since been washed (they were pretty grubby; not surprising since they were knit all over the place!) and are currently blocking. Soon as they're dry, I'll sew on the eyes (the kit came with 3mm silver-lined red beads; Herself said that wasn't bling-y enough. She gave me 4mm Swarovski fire-opal crystals to use instead.) and get more pictures of them - this time on the feet they're intended for. They really need to be seen *on* to get the full effect.

I've already CO Himself's scarf. I've never combined color-work and cables before, so....hopefully I won't have to rip back. We'll see.

The bruises have turned yellow-and-green...icky. The swelling is just about gone; it only hurts if someone/thing touches the bruised area. So - healing is occurring. This is good!

SG is...well, he's a man. Still hurts - to the point that he's annoying. :wry grin: (Why can't most men handle pain? I mean.....my leg only slowed me down the morning after it happened - I still kept up with chores/etc. HE'S been in bed since Thursday evening; when he's up, he's fine until someone asks him about things. :shakes head: I know I have a high pain-tolerance level, so it's kinda funny to me when other people *don't*. (He's also surprised that the antibiotics didn't fix him Right Then, and that pain meds take TIME to actually kick in. :shakes head:)

We got RAIN!!!!!!! Lovely, lovely rain!!!!! Saturday was nice and wet, as was this AM - and it's still looking like rain now. :happy dance:

Gotta go work on the scarf again. I'm interested in how it's going to turn out!
fiberaddict: (Default)
Thanks to a trip to the ER for SG yesterday. :sigh: He's been diagnosed with diverticulitis......sharp, deep pain on his right side, under the ribcage. His appendix was out when he was 16, so we knew it wasn't that, but it was getting worse so - in we went!

3 hours later, we were home. I had brought ONLY the Firebirds, because I was 8 rounds from binding them off - good call. Got them finished while he was having a CAT-scan, then started on the embroidery. :Sigh: Socks should be DONE when you bind off.....ah, well - they look MUCH better with the embroidery.

State of the me: The swelling is just about gone, but the bruises are starting to change color. It's all loverly black-and-blue now. I was pretty sure the doc was full of it - no, it hasn't started running down my leg (I....didn't think it worked that way), but the bruise on my ankle has gotten larger. I've started using E-balm on it to try and speed the healing (I can now stand to touch it!), so hopefully it'll be "normal" soon.

We've got a call in to SG's doc, so I better skitter. Shabbat Shalom and Happy Sukkot!
fiberaddict: (Default)
I spent most of the morning at the doctor. It's Loki's fault; he's not growing fast enough. See, we have a very tall bed. Loki insists on sleeping with us, but he can't get up or down on his own. So, last night I put him on the bed with me at 8. At 10, he decided he *really* needed to outside, please, so I got up and picked him up.

Now, I can't just set him down on the floor, because he's still a puppy - he'll get distracted, forget why he's no longer on the bed, and piddle where ever he is. So, I started to carry him to the bedroom door....and somehow slipped and lost my balance.

I fell *hard*, hitting my left leg on one of the dog dishes on my way down. It immediately started changing colors and swelling - and burning every time I even thought about moving it. :Sigh:

It was still burning this AM, so to the doctor we went. It's NOT broken - thank the Lord! - so I won't be testing my theory that I'm only 1 broken leg away from no yarn, but it is spectacularly bruised and looks like I have a tumor. Doc says it'll get worse - and gravity will pull the bruising down my leg and into my foot. :fun: And - there's nothing I can take, so I have to deal. And use lots of ice packs.

Sukkot begins tonight.....so it's poor timing on my part. I was going to try and convince SG to let me set up the tent outside, but not now - it's hard enough to walk INside, and the couch was uncomfortable enough last night - I don't think I could make it sleeping on the ground. :sigh: So, the tent will be set up in the living room again, and I get to camp out on the futon with a pile of pillows around my poor, abused leg.

At least I got 1.75 hours of knitting in - I'm about 20 rounds from *FINISHING* the sock. (Except for the embroidery. That shouldn't take too long!)

(Ali - OUCH! Hope your foot feels better than my leg!)
