May thunderstorms. Or something like that.

No photos this month, because my April socks consist of one (1) sock and a partial leg. :sigh: I have a GOOD reason, though! We are demolishing a barn 2 towns over - the owner posted an ad on CraigsList for free tin. Since I have goats that think barn destruction is a sport.......yeah. I NEED tin. (Plus I need a Honk Hotel...the geese aren't getting any smaller!) (Although we did lose 1 to the dreaded bobcat. :sigh: The fledgling area is now wired on top, and I left a present for the cat in it's feeding area. I have NO remorse - my neighbor reported that his neighbor got cornered on her porch by the bloody thing, so....yeah.)

Anyway. A 30' x 60' barn, built in the 1930s or '40s. I've gotten enough tin so far to rebuild the "love shack" (the breeding shed) - which is now a small pile of rubble - and the buck barn. Maybe enough to rebuild the hay barn (both buck and hay barns are going to be moved; the current spot will become the Goose Garden.). I *think* I have enough for the hay barn, too - but there's still a lot to pull down. Fun, but exhausting times!

I haven't spent my down time just sitting, though. I just finished bra #6 for me; with the 3 I've done for Herself - wait, 4; the first didn't fit AT ALL - and the 1 for Mom, that makes 11 bras in 2 weeks. We all need them, though.....

IF you want to start sewing your own, take my advice - buy a kit for the first 1 or 2, to figure out the fabrics, then get thee to Fabric Depot post haste. I picked up a value pack of their medium-to-heavy weight powernet ($35; there's $90 worth of fabric!)(granted, you get a mix of colors - I finally have NON-white bras!), a yard of tricot, and....something else, for about $100. They also have great prices on elastics (by-the-yard) and rings and sliders. If you don't mind Aliexpress, you can get a 50 pack of closures for $15-ish - since most kits run about $30, you'll be saving a TON.

Also, I found out that the finding kits I have can be dyed with my wool acid dyes (even the rings and sliders!). I have PLANS, y'all! (I already made a Valentine's bra (red findings, white cups, red lace, white frame and back)and I just finished a Tuxedo bra (black frame and back (value pack), white cups and lace and findings)...and I have a Chocolate and Cherries set almost ready to sew (brown powernet (from the value pack), red cups, red lace and red findings). The tricot cups and lace dye pastel with acid dyes, but Rit now has "dye everything" bottles that, well, dye everything. I hate Rit, but......a little goes a long way.

The husband was laid off mid-March, so I've been dealing with a grumpy jerk (sorry not sorry) for the past 6 weeks. The barn demolition is helping....sorta...but STILL. :sigh: Himself is trying to balance the scales by being super-guy; he's been baking more, and he's about to build me a firewood rack. (He helped knock the love shack down, and helped me run fence for the does Sunday. If it would quit raining for more than a day or 2, we'd be working on the new and improved love shack.....:big sigh:)

I need to rest my wrist - I kinda overdid it today. I *really* wanted to get that blasted bra finished......the lace was a pain. Basting spray is wonderful, but.....:sigh:

:whew!: It's been a bit busy around here.......LOTS going on. Let's dive in, shall we?

We started March the usual way - by picking up a load of chicks. We started with 20; lost 2 the first few days. That's normal....actually, it's better than usual. Day-old chicks spend their time looking for ways to die. :sigh: Any way, we have 9 Sapphire Queens, 4 Silver-laced Wyandottes, and 5 Cinnamon..something or other. They've grown quickly, and we are planning on moving them out today/tomorrow.

As well as the......geese. Um, yeah - the feed store got in 16 goslings, and...um.......we ended up with 6.

goslings

They're cute, but BOY HOWDY are they MESSY. And huge, comparatively speaking. So far, they are sweet...we'll see how long that lasts.

This explains last weekend's project - I built (with a little help from the husband) a fledgling hut. We'd been using dog crates, but.....they were not going to hold 24 birds. One of the mobile homes down the street has been sold to a flipper; the rehabbers told me I could rummage thru their trash pile if I wanted. I scored some skirting (tin!) and 2x4s.....after a quick trip to pick up some used pallets, I was set. It took all day Saturday, and a couple of hours Sunday, but we now have a fledgling hut (or, as we call it, the "Fluffly Butt Hut".)
Total out-of-pocket expense: $60.

I have more than enough pallets left to build a goose hut - I need to get more skirting first. For now the goslings will live with the chicks.

Last week, Zoe lost her kids......5 weeks early. I've been trying to bring in her milk, but it's just not working. :sigh: Hopefully the other does will carry to term - we need the milk!

It hasn't all been work, though - I've been knitting as well. I already showed you the Birds of Paradise mitts, now I give you: Dreidle Socks! The yarn is Blue Moon Fiber Arts BFL in the color way "Dreidle"; the pattern is Cookie A's Cubist Socks.

I then knit up a pair of mitts for Herself - another pattern by Kulabra, this one called "Frozen Songs". I dyed the yarn to Herself's specifications - Soot and Fire, and........here are her Firebird Mitts:

I was over the pattern halfway thru the first one.....

I've started a pair of socks, but you'll have to wait for photos. Since I actually started them in April, I'll save it for the April posting.

One more photo - this one is the resident Dragon King, Iroh. Herself made him a hat......he is NOT amused:

Mad Hatter Iroh

Today is grocery day, then we have to fix the run so the chicks/goslings will be safely contained. I'll try to get photos of them outside.......

We are OK. We never lost power, or water - our hot water heater froze Monday evening/Tuesday morning, but Herself dry-fired her kiln (to cone 5, for those that know these things) and it thawed it out. We did lose internet Sunday, and it was intermittent until Wednesday. Yes, we are Blessed, Thank G-d!

Here's the thing I don't understand......while we mostly have mild winters, ice storms and sub-zero temps are not unheard of. Our grid is separate from the rest of the US (the more you know....), and it is set up to handle streaks of 100+ summer days.

So...why, then, did this shut our grid *down*???? Because......the normal excuses don't wash. Normally, the excuse for rolling black/brown outs is because the grid is stressed under more load......only.....:deep breath:

In previous cold snaps, the strain on the grid was blamed on "more people are home, drawing power"...which is BS. Ignoring the plandemic - because people have been working from home for a year, now, leaving corporate offices closed (and thereby NOT drawing excess power!) - most people don't drop their thermostats in the winter when they leave the house. So......there's NO excess power being drawn to keep their homes at a steady temp. :scratches head: (They try this excuse in the Summer, too, when we hit 100+ - I still have a problem buying that, because.......Texas. This is normal for our Summers - and, again, I don't know anyone that actually changes their thermostat drastically when they leave their homes. Pull the other one....)

Also.....the water issue. I've been told ALL MY LIFE that when cold hits, you need to keep your faucets dripping. This time? We're being told to NOT let them drip......and the water companies are shutting off water. Um. Either we need to drip water to keep the lines from freezing, or we don't. It can't be drip one year, and magically NOT drip the next. That's not how it works!

I live on a farm. We have lost the outside water line - I heard it explode Saturday evening (the pipes were empty, because we drain them year-round, just because) but it was a 19 year old PVC pipe, that is exposed. (hmmmm.... I think the husband was the last to use it - he isn't in the habit of actually draining the lines like the rest of us are. :sigh:) We're hauling water...but the buried water lines are still intact. I don't understand how city water - in underground lines - would be affected......since I assume those lines are below the frost line (about 36"), and should be stouter than my cheap PVC lines. There shouldn't be any "extra strain" on the system, because, AGAIN, people have been working from home for the past YEAR. The system should already have been adjusted.

And since the water companies turned OFF the water with very little warning, people didn't have time (or the forethought) to drain their lines......which is what I am assuming is causing the broken pipe issues I'm seeing online. And.....if our rinky-dink little water supply company can manage to keep the water on, SURELY the big city water suppliers can, as well. (I have issues with our water company, but this isn't one of them. They have kept the water flowing here, and I am very thankful for it.)

I honestly don't know what to think. I'm trying to stay away from politics or conspiracy theories, but it's kinda hard when we're having all these problems, but OK, KS, etc seem to be doing OK. It makes no sense........and my BS meter is pegged.

:sigh: It's just odd. I have no problems with the stores being under-stocked, because I wouldn't want to drive an 18-wheeler on our un-treated, icy roads. (What? This is Texas - we get, maybe, 3 ice days/year. We don't have the infrastructure for treating icy roads, at least not in the rural areas. Heat, now - heat we can deal with. Ice? Causes us to lose our ever-loving minds and hunker down at home.)

Anyway. Our little slice of land is OK. Cold, but we have acres and acres of deadwood that I have been collecting for the wood stove. The stream is iced, but running deep. The ponds...I haven't checked. Probably one is an ice ring; the other is spring-fed and should be running under the ice. I need to head out soon and try to shop for Mom - hopefully the stores have pet food and milk!

we - make that I - had Suki put down yesterday. WITH the husband's grudging OK. :big sigh:

For those following, you'll remember she jumped Chloe 7/14/19, then attacked me when I intervened. I had the talk with the husband then - this was bite #4! - but no, it was my fault for trying to stop the fight. (Yes, it was my fault she got out when Chloe was out, but I refuse to accept blame for her attacking me.)

There have been a few incidences over the past year, but nothing major....until Sunday. We have - had - a pretty elaborate schedule of who was out when; it was time for Suki's mid-day bathroom break. I locked up Chloe, let out Suki, and told her to go outside. She didn't. I went to the back door, she ran outside. I didn't go out, so she came in and barked at me - normal stuff. I checked the other dogs - all were back, not near the pet door, so I opened the door, she ran out the pet door, and I stepped outside.

Normally, she'd jump off the porch and bark at me until I stepped off the porch. This time, she didn't. I took 1 step toward the porch edge, and Loki came out the pet door (along with Duncan).

Suki went from nice to vicious killer in 1 heartbeat, and attacked Loki. I panicked and started screaming; the husband vaulted the fence and tried to get her off. (He's lucky he didn't get bitten; I'm a little bitter that he didn't.) He managed to get her off Loki, and Himself grabbed him and rushed him into the kids' bathroom for treatment.

Herself had to guide me inside - apparently I had a panic attack. We doctored Loki up, and the husband came in to check on him. I will NOT share pictures - it's bad. Not life-threatening, but bad. His left front leg is pretty chewed up.

Long story short, I snapped and demanded he Do Something. He finally told me he couldn't, but I could....but it had to be tomorrow (Monday). (He actually wanted to find her another home. She has bitten humans *4* times, now - she was, legally, a dangerous dog. He disagreed, but facts are facts. *I* couldn't put another family in this position, nor could I live with myself if bite #5 was to a child.)

So. After a night spent on the couch (because yes, he let Suki sleep in the bed. Still.), I went in to check Loki (he had dragged himself into Himself's room, and after a bit of effort got up on his bed, where he refused to move.)....his leg was swollen to 2x its normal size, and he cried anytime we came close to touching it. I called the vet, actually got a tech, and set up both appointments......:sigh: and :sob:

Loki will be OK. He's having a hard time getting around - he can't put weight on his leg - and his appetite is just....not there. He has to take 3 pills 2x/day, and 1.5 pills 1x/day, so I have to go buy more lunch meat - cheese is Not Acceptable. I did finally get him outside this AM - he *really* didn't want to go, not that I can blame him. All the dogs know something is off, but I'm not sure they know she's gone. :sob:

Yes, I am sad - I HATE that it came to this. Yes, I have spent the last year terrified something like this would happen, but still.....

The husband is, as I expected, upset and pissed. At me. Because......nothing is ever his fault. I did expect this, and told the kids to expect it - I really didn't need 2 kids pissed at him on top of everything else. (They still are, but not because he's upset with me; they are because they saw this coming, too, and he did nothing he promised to try and head it off. :sigh:)

Hopefully I can sleep today - last night was not good. Loki managed to get in our bed, but any time someone bumped him he'd whimper. The husband was all in knots because Suki wasn't on top of him.....:big sigh:

Oh! To top everything off yesterday - as we were coming home from her appointment 3 skunks decided to cross in front of me. Not like the day already stunk or anything.....(G-d has a sense of humor. I can chuckle over it now, but yesterday not so much.)

I sincerely hope y'all's day/week is going better. I *know* this is for the best, but.........still. Any one wanna place bets on when we get another dog? (I've already had THAT talk, too - NO strays. Rescues/shelters/breeders ONLY. Puppies preferred. No, I'm not heartless - I know how he is. If I hadn't put my foot down, we'd be over-run with strays. I have to think of our current pack, and don't want to take in another unknown. Any bets on if THAT rule gets broken? :weak grin:)
fiberaddict: (Default)
1. Duncan is 2!!!!! Silly boy cut himself last week - I was treating him, but yesterday he didn't eat. :sigh: Took him to the vet (not our usual - they were booked.) - he's fine, just a little sore. The cut looked good - I think he just wanted to go for a car ride. The trip to Dairy Queen on the way home didn't hurt - nor did the Hunger Buster Jr. he got.

2. Did a little digging...seems that last year, in Texas, 11,000 people died from the flu. This year, in a "pandemic", not quite 4,000 have died from the "super deadly novel coronavirus". Um....yeah. These numbers are from the Texas State Health Department - make your own conclusions. (Because honestly, you can extrapolate. Texas can't be an outlier - not when we're "2nd in the Nation for new cases!" - so you can bet most other states/countries numbers are pretty close to the same.)

3. Sewing! Been hitting it out of the park, lately. I finally got brave and started embroidering some new shirts - I have 2 (pics forthcoming!) that turned out WONDERFULLY well and fit my style. I've always leaned BoHo, but squelched it because it's not easy to find at a price point I can afford. Now? Sky's the limit!

3a. My new favorite top pattern is the Twig + Tale Women's Breeze shirt. Kinda peasant-y, kinda flowy, and a perfect canvas for embroidery. My first one is linen with bluebonnets; the 2nd is a cotton/ramie chambray with hummingbirds and flowers. I'm going thru my files to find more......this is fun!

3b. Although my machine isn't quite with me. The automatic needle-threader decided to die violently on the 2nd motif on the front of shirt #2. Not a huge issue - I can manually thread the needle - just an annoyance. 25 thread changes weren't fun......but do-able. Himself looked at it, but it's FUBAR; I'm not sure if I want to go to the hassle of trying to get it repaired now, or if I just live with it (probably live with it. Again, it's not a big deal.)

4. There is currently a possum in my chicken feed can. I noped right out of there - the kids will handle it. The chickens got goat feed this morning......that's farm life for ya!

5. There is no 5.

6. Been reading.........did you know that masks are big in the occult? And that symbolically they silence people? And make them into "others" (think cyber-bullying, and how people act differently behind a screen than they do in real life.) Putting that together with the Reality of Duality........folks, I think the Mark of the Beast might not be what the church has taught - it might be symbolic and NOT physical. This guy takes a few hundred words to say it, but it's worth reading.......if you have ears to hear. Yes, it's wordy....but I think there's a lot of Truth to it - and it's sobering. And worth considering. (And Anonymous, I don't care that you don't agree with me. Just.....don't read me. No one is forcing you to, right?? (OR...are they?????) Just move along......but you might want to check out the link. You might learn something.)

Gotta skitter - got to buy grain, evict a possum, and get a new shirt cut out. And find some linen for shorts/pants......I've just about replaced all my cheap, store-bought blouses (NOT my t-shirts, though. Those I'm keeping.) with nice, natural-fiber ones. (Ramie.....is a bit problematic. YES, it's "natural", but...only through man-made means. :sigh:) I need pants......so that's next up. I think Cashmerette's Calder pants fit the bill...we'll see.

Happy July!

It's been......hot, lately. And weird. Mask orders are back, but very few people care. It's just too damn HOT, for one thing. For another.......all the orders read something along the lines of "wear masks IF you can't stay 6' apart". Yeah. Whatever. :rolls eyes: Plus, you can claim a medical exemption without any proof....so.....yeah. CYA, much? People are pretty much DONE, out here.

We've been busy. Show, don't tell, am I right?

This is my new path to the Studio. Total cost - $52, give or take a few. I think I want another $20 worth of gravel, so grand total will be $72, or so. Not bad for a pathway, huh?

Next up: Himself and I NEED to get the new dragon cage built. The plywood is cut, we just need to get out there and DO it. Then we need to get the drywall up in my Studio...the eaves were never finished, and it's really bugging me. We have the insulation and drywall, it just needs to be done. :sigh:

In the Studio: working on a gauze top. I finally got my Nani Iro double gauze......I started a Jules in a plain gauze, to test the sleeves, but I'm thinking it's too "fussy" for the Nani Iro. I'm looking at a Scroop Pattern for it....the Henrietta Marie blouse. I need to think a bit more - I'm not sure the pleats at the neck aren't too fussy. We'll see. It's not like I don't need a few more cool, breezy tops for the heat that is coming. (It's already in the 90s, here - I am SO not looking forward to August......)
fiberaddict: (Default)
and HOT!

So. A couple of weeks ago, Himself and I were out walking. I saw a pile of something on the side of the road - we have a lot of illegal dumpers out here - so we slowed down to take a look. It was a pile of granite cut-offs; they were about 1/2" thick, and there were a TON of them. I took a pic and texted it to the husband with the caption "I can use these as a path?"

He called and said "Yes. We'll pick them up when I get home."

Turns out, there was enough there to fill the truck bed up to about the half-way point.

Two days later, he stopped at the local new construction home division, and got permission to clear out some of the brick debris pile........despite being photographed and reported by a resident, we came home with 2 truck loads of broken brick and Austin stone. I mean, I GET it, we were picking up bricks...but I deliberately wore my loudest and brightest tie-dyed shirt, we were gathering them IN THE MORNING, in daylight, and we weren't trying to hide - we had permission!! :sheesh!: Guess the lack of face diapers made us suspicious.

Anyway. We currently have a path from the back porch to my Studio outlined in brick. We filled it in with cushion....dirt (old compost from the buck barn), and will be placing the granite in the next few days. Our only expense (besides gas and sweat) is $12 for the Liquid Nails (holding the bricks together in bunches of 6 or so) and $7 for the landscaping fabric. Not to bad!

In the Studio - current project is a new set of shorty overalls for me. Fabric is from IKEA, of all places! I have the front done, just need to get the back sewn up and the whole shebang assembled. Then it's another shirt for Himself, and on to shorts for me.

Not a lot else to report.
oh! A hen hatched out 5 chicks; they're currently in Herself's Studio. Fun times!
fiberaddict: (Default)
With Himself getting into sewing, I knew I needed to reorganize my Studio. He'd agreed to help, but I have to wait on his depression......so for the past 3 days, I've been working on my pattern problem. Since I know there's a LOT of new sewers out there, I figured I'd whip up a post - it might help someone else (even though I think I have a readership of 3. 2 of which are family.....

For the past....century or so, patterns have come on paper, purchased from (usually) a fabric store. JoAnn's (and to a lesser extent, Hobby Lobby), has been famous for running sales - usually once a month, for one week, particular companies were put on sale for $1.99/each.....which is a HUGE savings. (Paper patterns tend to run any where from $9.95 - $20.00+ - being able to snag them for $1.99 each is a Big Deal!)

About...5 years ago? 10? Independent pattern companies hit the scene with print-at-home pdf patterns. I looked at them, and bought a few, but......seriously, why pay $7.50+ for a pattern *I* had to print myself, when I could hit JoAnn's and get a ready-to-go pattern for $2? It didn't make sense to me, because SURELY it cost a lot to print at home, right?

Um.....no. I am ashamed to admit I never did a cost analysis of pdf patterns before Wednesday.....because it never crossed my mind. I mean, I had hauled some files to Staples to print them, because - surely! - it was cheaper to print wide-format and skip the expensive and time consuming step of taping all those (expensive!) pages together.....Staples charges $7.50/page. Or did - Herself bought a plotter for us (which I still need to get up and running; I think I have the correct drivers now on my gaming rig. It's actually moot - you'll see...) and we haven't been back to Staples since. (Organization is coming up, I promise!)

OK. So.....I can buy a pdf pattern for $7.50 (or less!). A pack of paper from Wally-World (the closest place to me that carries copy paper) is $3.97/500 sheets. That breaks out to $0.00794 per page. Um......I don't like "messy" math, so let's round up to $0.01/page, to keep it easy. The typical pattern that I buy is 50 pages (36 or so for the actual pattern, the rest is the instructions. YES, I print the instructions; I want them on hand for note-taking, plus you never know when a small company will go out of business.) So: $0.50 to print the pattern....since I rounded up, and since pattern pages don't use a lot of ink/toner, I think we are probably safe in assuming the ink costs are built in. I did a quick online check; regular office printing runs about $0.03/page......again, patterns don't have that much printing per page.

Cost so far: $8. Now we need to tape that sucker together! Scotch brand tape runs $6.47/4 pack (at my local Wally-World) - that's $1.6175/roll. I usually buy generic, but let's run with this. I can usually tape 2 patterns together per roll, so that's $0.80875 in tape per pattern.....let's round up and our total for a print-at-home pdf pattern is $9.

******* $9.00 ********

I won't factor in the cost of tracing paper, pencils and time, since I trace ALL my patterns off as a matter of course. That way the original is safe, and I don't have to reprint it if I decide to change something, like a neckline, sleeve, or length.

ANYWAY.

I have spent the last 3 days sorting my patterns into storage boxes, both paper and pdf. I also took the time to update my pdf organization...which is the main thing I wanted to post about. I have...a LOT of pdf patterns; most free, but still. That's a LOT of files to keep track of.....what's the "best" way to go about it?

Some people use a filing cabinet; the patterns go in there while the envelope/picture from the pdf go in page protectors in a notebook. Works, but......how do you know what you already have when you are looking a patterns in a store/online? You *could* carry a small spiral notebook around, with all your patterns hand-listed.........but that's a LOT of work.

Some people use OneNote. I looked at that......but it didn't click with me. It makes little sense - it might work for you; it does for a lot of people. I needed something else - what I wanted was basically Ravelry, but off-line. Bonus points if it works on both mobile and laptop! Oh, and it HAS to be Mac-compatible, since I am (mostly) Mac-only. (The gaming rig is nice, but......gaming. And some work. Mostly gaming. Plus my phone is Apple, so....yeah.)

What I ended up with is Tap Forms, a database that also has an app. After a LOT of work, I ended up with 2 databases - the mobile version is a list of all my patterns while the laptop version has the actual files attached. (Plus the laptop version has all my knitting pdfs, all my :sob: weaving pdfs, AND finished projects. Plus blank forms for spinning and tatting, so that all my fiber-crafts are saved in 1 spot. It's....nice. VERY nice. If I could figure out how to link the pattern entry to the finished project entry, I'd be set, but so far that's eluded me. It's not necessary, really - it would just be nice.)

While I sorted my patterns in the Studio, I made sure they were on my phone. When I got back to the house, I sat down with the laptop and made sure most of the pdfs were also on my phone - I left off some of the free quilting patterns, and a lot of the free apron patterns. I don't care if I download them again - they're free!

All my paper patterns are in, with photos of both the front and back of the envelope - no more guessing on fabric type and amount! (The pdfs are set up the same way...mostly. If I haven't printed them yet, I don't have photos. I tend to print them before buying fabric, so....it works for me.) I have tags, so if I do happen across some awesome fabric that HAS to become a hat/shirt/whatever, I can pull up the patterns that have that tag. PLUS - no more duplicate patterns!

The laptop version is basically the mobile version, but with a few less details. I don't have a listing for "box" for example (which tells me WHERE the pattern is located in my Studio; if it's blank then I haven't printed it off yet), nor do I have the fabric requirements/recommendation. I do have the actual pdf attached - which is NOT on the mobile version. I also have any embroidery files attached (on the laptop) for things like plushies - it makes it easier to find them/remember I have them. (Embroidery files are also housed on a separate USB stick, for use at the machine. I don't want to have to haul my laptop out every time I want to embroider something.)

Himself came out today and started brainstorming a more efficient setup. The serger has been moved, as has my full-length mirror. The embroidery machine desk is going to be replaced with a 4x2 kallax - there will be room for a 2nd machine, should we decide we need one! (Right now, no - but the idea has been floated; the current machine for bags and things, and one with a larger hoop for clothing. I'm in no rush, but having space already set up will be nice.) The current desk will be donated. There's just enough room for a new desk for his machine, where the serger was - we're just waiting for Ikea to reopen so we can give them more money.........every day they are closed is another day I might go to Home Depot instead. :hint hint:

That's where we are right now - my Studio is all 6's and 7's right now, but will be put in order tomorrow. I have a blouse cut out (Love Notions' Rhapsody blouse with 3/4 length Bishop sleeves), then I need to make up a new shirt for Himself.

The husband wants to go get dinner - gotta skitter!
fiberaddict: (Default)
but they left the stupid POWER CORD out of the box! I have no way to use it, let alone TEST it to see if it actually works. :bangs head:

I am *this close* to heading to Amazon and replacing the bloody thing......then when I get the cord trying to sell this one. I am SO tired of dealing with Asurion.......:big sigh:

Oh well. I am waiting on the customer service department to call me back........

We went to see the Sonic movie Saturday - it was fun. I still hate Jim Carey with a passion, but he actually fit the part. I enjoyed it enough that I am willing to go and see it in the theatre *again*, which is rare.

My Studio is almost presentable! I have the ironing station built and set up. It's nice - I can iron full widths of fabric at one time now - no more doing it by halves! I also bought a clothes rack - it's great! I can hang up my cosplays and works-in-progress now, and not take up valuable sitting space!

Tax season is upon us...........fun times!

Because.....I am no longer with loom. !!!! I posted it on CL on Monday, got a nibble Tuesday (but he never came back after I responded), updated the listing Thursday (added a BUNCH of stuff, and raised the price a little bit)....and yesterday. Yesterday a very nice lady contacted me, we emailed back and forth, and she paypal'd me the money after lunch. They are coming up to pick it up next Saturday. !!!!!

I am....well, sad. This is the end of an era for me. I'm also happy, because this is an awesome loom that deserves to be used and loved - and this weaver has been wanting *this* model of loom for a while. (Like me!) I'm glad - she got a really good deal, I got a fair price, and I will be able to move on now, without being depressed every time I look at the loom, sitting forlornly on the other side of the studio. (I'll stop with the dramatics now, I promise!)

I'm going to take it apart today, label the various extras, and start planning on the reorganization. I'm not going to fill up the space - honest! - but I am going to hack an Ikea kallax into a pressing station and get rid of the ironing board. The dress forms will be moved over on that side, and I'll rearrange the furniture.

So. That's a huge blessing for me - and I know someone else out there had to be praying. Thanks! :hugs:

In other news, Friday we headed out to hit the fabric outlets in Dallas. Last November a tornado had gone thru - according to everything I found online, the stores were "slightly" damaged.....yeah. Not so much - 2 of our favorites are...well, basically gone. The one with the awesome denim prices is half demolished (but I found out yesterday they've moved temporarily down the street...would have been nice to know that Friday, but that's on me). The one next door, owned by the.....um.......slightly overbearing but kinda endearing gentleman is totaled. He just opened an etsy shop mid-January, so we can continue to shop with him, but it's kinda...sad. He had the best button collection! And interesting fabrics - online isn't quite the same.

The largest store is still there, untouched. They have great prices on silk - but we weren't there for silk. Their clearance room has great prices, but.....the selection is a bit weird. Still, I scored 10 yards of knit fabric (5 green, 5 blue) for $0.99/yard, and Herself got some nice...I don't know what it actually is, but it looks like a silk noil for $1.99/yard. Among other things...she made out like a bandit, I spent $10.

I think that brings us up to date. I need to head to the Studio to start packing up the loom and all it's accessories, and to try to organize some of the fabric. Tomorrow is grocery day...then it's on to Tax Season. Fun stuff!

Let's see. The Jeep has been acting up lately - it'll try to start, then "hang" and shake. We took it in last month, but of course the minute we got there, she straightened up and refused to show the mechanic what she was doing. She'd been running normally....until yesterday.

Yesterday we were at Thrallmart picking up bubble wrap*. I got back in, turned the key....and she did her thing. 10 or 12 times. She finally started, so Himself and I took her straight to the garage....where she promptly started like a good girl. :bangs head: We tried...for 30 minutes, but she was a perfect little angel. The owner told me I could leave her.....I didn't want to walk home, so I made an appointment to drop her off on Saturday. We got back in....and she acted up. Himself ran in, the owner came out, and she demonstrated. And totally confused all 3 mechanics, because it wasn't the starter - it was getting power. It wasn't the fuel pump, because it showered the guy lucky enough to check. They gave me a soccer mom van, and told me that they'd look at her.

I just picked her up....she wanted new spark plugs. :bangs head: At least it wasn't an expensive fix!

*We needed bubble wrap, because I had to send my embroidery machine in. Saturday I sat down to do a pair of eyes on a new hoodie. It did half of the first eye, and died. The icon said "overheat". OK. I let it sit for 10 minutes after the icon went away, and started it back up. 5 stitches later, same icon. Waited again for 10 minutes, wash, rinse repeat. I did a hard reboot (i.e. I turned it off, counted to 10, and turned it back on again.) Same thing.

Sunday morning, I tried again. This time it made it 10 stitches before dying. :sigh:

Fortunately, I had purchased the 3 year Protection Plan. Since I bought it 8/1/17.....Asurion kicked in. And promptly rejected my claim. I called in Monday AM and a supervisor approved it. I sent in the paperwork...and gee, because I used my cell number instead of the home number, it got kicked out. Again. Called back, got it straightened out, then got an email telling me to box it up and send it in for repairs. Sure. I hooped up the stabilizer, fleece, and water soluble on the other half of the unfinished piece, made sure there was a bobbin in the machine and thread on top, then wrapped the entire thing in almost 200' of bubble wrap. I did NOT include the USB stick, so....they'll have to figure it out. (They told me NOT to include any peripherals. I'm not really sure HOW they think they can recreate the problem without that specific file - I did try, on Sunday, to use quilting cotton and 1 of the pre-installed files. It died, started up, died, started up, and actually got 1/4 of the way thru before I stopped it and re-attached the hoodie.......where it promptly died after 2 stitches. :sigh: It's NOT the fabric - this is hoodie #4, in a row, using the same combo. Same thread in both bobbin and spool, too. And a new needle. And eye #3 of this file....so....I dunno what's going on.)

I'm kinda hoping they say Nope! Refund! because I'd kinda like to downgrade to a Brother. They have better reviews - but I'll be happy with a working machine. I'd like to get that hoodie out of the Studio....I have plans for other embellishments, now that I'm kinda, sorta, over my intimidation.

Also, in other news, the husband called me today, said his former boss (the electrician) called and offered him a job, what did I think? He already knew......so he said he's turning in his 2 weeks notice tonight. Yeah, we'll see. I hope he goes thru with it....I hate this job.

Oh! I listed my loom and all it's flotsam and jetsam. :sigh: The kids convinced me that if I can't weave (nope. Can't. Tried. Cried.) there's no reason to keep the books, yarn, warping reel, bobbin winder, bobbins, shuttles....:sigh: I AM keeping most of my handmade Bluster Bay shuttles, though - I just can't get rid of them. They were all custom made to order for me, most out of paduak, and BB is out of business now. :sob: I've had one nibble, but no one's wanted to come look, yet. I hope someone does - this loom needs to be used and loved!

Herself has a dress all cut out. We've done a muslin of the bodice, and it looks like it fits (maybe a titch big, but that can be easily fixed.) - she's excited and already planning her next 20+. :eye roll: I'm glad she's gung-ho, but......I'm tired of hearing all the plans. Aspie's get *intense*, yo.

This year has started with a bang. Himself asked for a hoodie for an upcoming (2/14) movie, so I got on the ball and have a "blue blur" hoodie almost finished. Pics when done - right now, it just looks sad. The fabric is on order for the yellow sidekick - Herself said she'd gladly wear it.

The order from Yourfleece.com came in - it's GREAT. Mid-weight fleece - that is in local stores for $9.00+/yard! - for $3.75/yard, with free shipping if over $36. It sews up nicely, with very little curl. I don't know how it'll wear, but from what I've seen so far, it's a winner.

I have 2 hoodies to do for me (Eevee and a shiny Charizard - why not? They're cute, fun, and not difficult to sew - might as well have some fun!), and 1 for Herself (Toy Bonnie. I'm thinking Birthday prezzie, here.) I need to find a source for decent, inexpensive sweatshirt fabric (in brown.) for a kigurumi (Eevee, again). I need something warm and casual for lounging around the house.

No resolutions this year. I am going to try to sew up as much of the backlog of fabric as I can, to help clean up my Studio. I'm working on decluttering the house - baby steps. I have to take it slow, because of my wrist (I spent too long in the Studio yesterday, and I'm feeling it this morning. :sigh: Still - need to get it done! Might skip today......we'll see.)

We survived the storms Friday evening, Thank G-d! We're still wet, but that's not too bad. The sirens went off, but everything missed us - it's the first time I've heard sirens out here. G-d is Good!
fiberaddict: (Default)
This year, that is. 1/2/20, Mom went to the ER - it wasn't serious, Praise G-d! - with a stomach virus and possible pneumonia. I came home with a cough that is trying very very hard to become an upper respiratory thing. :sigh: Fun times!

Ah, well. In better news, Herself has decided she MUST! sew herself a new wardrobe. She's decided she's really into the Japanese Lolita style (think...living doll, with a serious Victorian vibe. VERY modest - skirts are at least knee length, and very little skin.) - we spent way too much $$ at Hobby Lobby on fabric and ribbons. Still.....SHE'S going to sew, so I won't complain. To be fair, I'm leaning towards the Japanese mori-look, myself (a slightly tighter fitting Lagenlook......basically, layers. Loose-fitting tops over slim pants, or a dress over a skirt.), so I really have no room to talk. I just need to find the energy to actually sew.....:sigh:

Himself has requested a long-sleeved PLAID shirt. Huzzah! and OhNo! He's also requested (!!!) a Sonic (!!!!) Hoodie(!!!!!!!), to be worn to the upcoming movie. I can do that! I found a shop online with fleece at what I consider a decent price (your fleece.com; 12 yards of non-pill fleece for $45 total. That's a LOT less than I can get it locally!) - it should arrive Friday, so...we'll see. Here's hoping the quality is decent!

Also, Himself bought Herself a Charizard kirugumi for Hanukkah. Basically, an adult-sized, character-themed onesie. It was.......more $$$ than *I* would spend, but a) Hanukkah, and b) it was part of a buy 2, get 1 free sale. Upon seeing how comfortable it was.....I went hunting for a pattern. Cutsew.com has them......I'm not thrilled with them at the moment. Their patterns are $20, but you have to download the instructions - they don't come with the printed pattern. :grumble: I've printed them out (I don't use my iPad in the sewing studio - I prefer paper, so I can make notes), now we wait for the printed pattern to come. I'm thinking I need to get some sweatshirt fabric....we'll see. Need to decide on what, exactly, I want to theme it as. (Why yes, I DO need a onesie. For days like today, when all I want to do is sleep. The rest of the family won't be able to con me into leaving the house if I'm in a silly onesie, now will they?)

Not much else is going on. I was hit with a massive "Must Clean All the Things!" bug the last of December....my kitchen has been decluttered and reorganized, and I've started on the breakfast area. Herself has started organizing her Studio, and Himself, not to be outdone, has been working on his shelves. I hope THIS bug hangs around - I'd like to get the rest of the house decluttered, but this chest bug has kinda slowed me down. :sigh:

so. the kids and i talked earlier this week - they are my chore buddies, and i value their opinions - and we have decided to *not* breed any does this year. no kids, therefore, no milking.

this means, of course, no fresh milk for us. it also means, of course, i don't have to try and hand-milk 4 does. machine-milking is out, for now, because i can't hook up 2 inflations at once right now. we've done 1 at a time in the past...it's not fun, because the does tend to get antsy when only 1 side is being milked, and dance when you try to attach the other inflation. honestly - it's faster to hand-milk 4 or fewer goats than it is to machine-milk them. the actual milking goes faster on the machine, yes - but then you have to haul water to *clean* the machine. that's not an option for me, right now, so - i take a year off, try to strengthen my hand and wrist, and try to regain some range-of-motion.

soap-making *will* happen, but i'll buy the milk.

i'm also seriously thinking about down-sizing my loom. i'm not ready to give up weaving, not yet, and i'm not using the full width of my current loom anyway. honestly - i haven't woven much this past year or so, anyway; i've been more focused on sewing. i just.....i'm not ready to *not* call myself a weaver. i need to sit down and see how painful/difficult weaving is before i make any solid decision - but at the moment i think down-sizing is the right thing to do. maybe. i love this loom.........we'll see.

i'm currently in full declutter mode, for some reason. the kitchen was done yesterday - got rid of 2 trash bags of stuff that, while usable, isn't donate-able (i'll use broken/faded/not fully-functionable things, but i won't give them to people.) today is an ikea run to get a few organizers to finish the drawers, then i'll start on the cookbooks. i have SO many cookbooks! i need to weed them, then go thru the other bookshelves and make a run to the used book shop. they'll give me credit - yes, more books, but less than half of what i brought it, so it's still a win. then i'll start on the family room.....

herself is doing a major overhaul of her studio space. 10 trash bags so far, and she's just started. the goal is to get her space clean and set up so i can get my dining room back. himself is working on his room - guess my mood is infectious! hope there's no vaccine for it - this really needs to be done.

i've got herself's Hanukkah present started - a scorbunny hoodie. pattern is by choly knight - she's awesome. her patterns are well-written, go together pretty easily, and she has "hacking" packs for some of them to customize them. the hoodie pattern was already traced off (herself made her Bakugo hoodie from it), so all i had to do was print 2 copies of the scorbunny add-ons and cut them out. i have all the small parts cut out of the fabric, just need to cut the back, front and sleeves then i can start assembling it. i'm working on a scarf for himself - it's not the one i started back in june; this one is a simple 3-cable one. it's taking me ages - i started this back in october. i can only knit 2 or 3 rows at a time...but it'll get done eventually. then hopefully i can go back to his "real" scarf........:sigh: (he saw fox paws and got intrigued. i got him to give me the 5 colors, i ordered yarn, and cast on. i got almost to the end of the first repeat when the dog nation attacked .....i can't do the 5 stitch-decrease or the multiple increases right now. hopefully soon.....

So. Y'all know the story - dog bite 7/24, ER didn't do their damn jobs yada yada. Our insurance plan changed 10/1 - we had no choice in the matter. Now, my doctor - who still takes Cigna, you understand, and - again! - we had NO CHOICE in whether or not we were going to change plans or not - is no longer "In Network", so Cigna covers 60%, AFTER I meet the NEW deductible.

To recap: I had an accident 7/24/19. I met the damned deductible inn the ER visit on the same damn day. On 10/1/19, our plan changed - again, no choice in the matter - and a) I have to meet ANOTHER $1,500 deductible, b)my doctor - who hasn't changed ANYTHING on his end - is now OUT OF NETWORK, meaning I have to pay $99 out of his $111 visit charge.

Tell me again how this insurance is worth anything?????

EVERY other policy I have had in my life rolled over the deductible if it was an on-going (not chronic, of course) thing. This - I can't even.

Looks like I get to live with an unhealing, broken arm for....well, however long it takes for the bloody thing to heal. I can't afford to go back to the doctor, with OR without insurance, so guess that's that, then.

And NO - socialized/single payer is NOT the answer. 1 - it's not free, doctors/nurses/their suppliers have to be paid somehow, and where do you think that money will come from? and 2 - do you REALLY trust the government to run healthcare correctly? (Ummmm...think $250,000 hammers. Seriously - you want those bozos in charge of YOUR health?)

Sorry - I just had to vent. Now I'm going to go bash my head against a wall for a bit - and then cancel my 12/13 doctor appointment. There's really no point in keeping it if I can't afford to actually DO anything (since doc's already said surgery is the next step, IF I am still in pain (yup!) and if the bone isn't healing (don't know, but since it's swollen and squishy, I'm thinking it isn't, or it's healing very slowly. Either way, I can't afford to do anything, so.....why bother?)

finally! took me 4 hours to knit a toe, but the blasted sock is done! :happy dance:

let's see:

1. had the stand for the new reptile habitat finished and ready to move into the house (not herself's room, yet, but in the house). only.....the husband found 2 more rotten boards that need replacing (no, i did't notice them while painting. he did, when he tried to lift the bloody thing by 1 board and it broke. :sigh:) then he shattered the masonry board on the side........this just gets better and better, doesn't it?

i tried to remove the mirroring on the sliding glass doors of the cage, and failed. we did get new glass cut, but not put in yet. we also got the final boards to make the riser for the bottom (we had boards....he had 2, and i bought 2. he just didn't tell me he was using his 2 to repair the stand. :bangs head:) ah, well - it worked out better. the bottom will be out of 2 x 6's instead of 2 x 4's, which makes it slightly taller, and therefor better for the young kaiju.

updated plan: the new habitat will be ready for occupancy *next* saturday.

2. rain! we had a gully-washer come thru last night. bad, heavy rain. thank G-d we have no damage!

3. the husband got to see suki at her antics again last night. she decided riley insulted her and jumped him.....and yet, she's still here. :big sigh: is is bad of me to wish he'd been bitten? because...yeah. maybe that would force him to *do* something. :sigh:

not much else to say. i *really* need to get back to putting stuff into tap forms. knitting is pretty much done, except for my projects, but sewing? not so much. :sigh: hurts to type, but.......
fiberaddict: (Default)
so. went to the doc today about my wrist. he took x-rays.....seems the bone is NOT healing. i still have a nice gap between the 2 pieces - herself says it looks to be 3mm; i dunno. doc mentioned surgery....not fun. i go back 12/13 to see if it's gotten any better. he's concerned, since the pain hasn't decreased at all.

good news - i have more range of motion now. i think i tore scar tissue, which is why i can move it more. it's still not back to where it should be, but hey - i can move it more! we won't discuss how much it hurts, right? or the fact that it still takes me about 10 minutes per row on my sock...which is ridiculous. it took me 2.5 hours to knit half a toe. :sigh: i've got presents to knit - this is NOT good.

i still have a few exercises to do, but......they won't help the bone heal.

ah well, we'll see. i will keep plugging away at the sock that's been on the needles since JULY. (normally it takes 10 days to complete a pair of color-worked socks. this pair is plain - no pattern, no color, no texture...just knitting. :sigh:
fiberaddict: (Default)
i have pictures! been busy, as usual - i can sew, but can't knit much. i spent most of last weekend tidying the studio - i have carpet! who knew??

let's start with my arm - these pics are about 2 weeks old, but nothing's changed. it is a *lot* better than it was when it happened, so i don't mind sharing these:

arm top

arm underside

the worst one, pain-wise, is the one at the heel of my hand. it feels raw......i still can't flip my hand over, and my range of motion is still very limited. my pain level is sitting at....3.5-ish.

next up, meet Tohru! herself has had Iroh for almost a year, now, and he was acting very mopey. we discussed it, but had decided to not get him a tank mate - females are hard to find, and putting 2 older males together isn't recommended....then the serpantarium called with an owner-surrendered female. we resided...until my brother sent a photo. :sigh:

Tohru and Iroh

she's the bigger, darker one....and according to herself, she's mine. she and Iroh are getting along, so that's good - and he's no longer mopey. (i like lizards, just hadn't really considered owning one. herself didn't want to be a multi-lizard owner, so.......*i* have a lizard.)

now, the important things: what i have been up to in the studio: shirts. for me. i wanted some classic camp-style shirts, and victoria jones #220 caught my eye. it's a traditional man's hawaiian shirt, which was the look i wanted.

hawaiian shirt green

this was the first one - fabric was from a "famous hawaiian designer" from fabric mart. this was my muslin - it fits, but not quite well enough.

hawaiian shirt birds

2nd attempt. fit is better, but not quite there. i added 1/4" to the side seams.....it made the body fit my curves better, but i wanted a little more ease. the collar is better - i didn't like the pattern instructions; too much hand-sewing. i basically used the simplicity dress shirt's directions - i like the finish the yoke-burrito gives you. fabric is from the same lot from fabric mart as #1; i have enough left to make herself a top, too.

hawaiian shirt purple

this one.......my favorite. the fabric is from hawaii - it's cotton, it's a nice mid-weight, and it is lovely. i have 2 more pieces i need to sew up.....anyway. i added 1/2" this time, instead of 1/4", and the fit is exactly what i wanted. loose, comfy, and iconic. i did move the buttons to the other side.....silly, but i wanted to emphasize it was a women's shirt. i'm not sure if the other 2 pieces will end up as this pattern, though, as herself and i went in together and bought 2 used lutterloh sets.

lutterloh shirt green

which...here's my first attempt at a lutterloh shirt for me (i made up a tank for herself, but it needs a little more work. the first book is from 1980....and i had to lower the neckline/armscyre/bust dart. i should have just lengthened the shoulder straps.......) this pattern is from the current supplement; lutterloh is interesting as you get a book of 40 tiny patterns that you have to draft to your size. it's not a perfect fit - you still have to make your normal alterations - but it's closer than commercial patterns. and cheaper - 40 patterns for $20. (if you're interested, try to find an older set - the new sets are about $130; we scored 1 set for $30 (280 patterns) and the other for $42 (280 patterns) Supplements are $20-ish.......all you really need are the supplements and the ruler. instructions are on-line - it's easy. and fun. and faster than tracing, for me.) we'll see how it fits, once i get it done.

think that gets you up-to-date....later!
fiberaddict: (Default)
(only, not look - i don't have photos yet).

got the cast off today. doc looked at it, did a bunch of tests......and walked me into his therapy dept and had me do a session. i have very very limited range of motion, the novocaine-feeling numbness is worse, and he is concerned. (i can't flip my hand over, i can't rotate it at all, and i can't flap it back and forth at all - which is bad. i also have a distinct lack of feeling on the top of my hand - which isn't as bad, since we don't do a lot of sensitive stuff with the back of the hand. still....)

i have a nerve test set up for the 17th, with an appt with him directly after, and a therapy session directly after *that*. i have 6 exercises i have to do 3x/day, 10 reps each, plus i have to massage my wrist 2x/day. fun stuff! (only, not really). i also have to wear a brace all the time, except in the shower and when doing the exercises/massage.

in other news, i knit 2 rounds of my sock! in about 30 minutes.....:sigh:

i also sewed up a shirt for me on sunday - it only took 5 hours. :big sigh: i cut another one out yesterday - 2 hours to cut 7 pieces out. (some of the doubled, but most single-layer to try to do pattern matching. i failed but the shirt should be wearable anyway.)

gotta say, i've done a lot of reading recently. since the accident, i've plowed thru......14 books. so far. at least i can read 1-handed.
fiberaddict: (Default)
is good news, right? doc looked at bites, said they looked good, did the pressure-test-thingy (i'm still at the high end of normal), and told me to come back next Friday for new x-rays and - probably - a real cast. whee! i am bruised, slightly swollen, and my pinkie and ring fingers feel full of novocain. we wait and see, now.

apple replaced my watch - but didn't give me a band. :scratches head: oh, well - herself bought me one, so soon as the watch finishes updating i can strap it on my right wrist and go. i've missed it - i've gotten used to getting notifications on my wrist without needing to look at the phone.

so, that's where we are at.....Friday i should maybe know something.
