fiberaddict: (fiber: AA Scottish Wheel)
So, I've been playing with the Pyr hair I was gifted at NTIF. It's....interesting.

The fiber is mostly clippings; the butt end is, in some cases, slightly matted. I don't know if it came off the donor dog(s) that way, or if it matted when the rescue person washed it. It is clean-ish (it would have come cleaner if the fiber had been picked before washing, but since *I* didn't have to do it, I won't complain), smells OK (not doggy), but, because it is from more than 1 dog, it's all over the place quality-wise. Most of the fiber is 3" or so in length; it consists of both the downy, soft undercoat and the longer, coarser guard hairs.

The first skein was done at NTIF. I handcarded bits of fiber (on my 1/2 size Louet cotton handcards), then spun the rolags long draw on my Norwegian (I don't know the bobbin whorl size, since I had to keep switching them out). The resulting 2-ply is disappointing - the singles are overspun in spots, slightly underspun in others. Plying fixed some of the problems, but not all. I attribute this to a)I was demo-ing, and not able to get in the groove while spinning, and b)I think my lovely Norwegian is slightly *too* fast for this fiber. Soon as I get my flyer array back from Alden, I'll test that, but for the moment I'm running with it.

I thought about flicking next. I don't think this is a good idea - the fiber flies *everywhere*, and I was afraid that flicking would simply make a huge mess. Plus, I can't get a good rhythm with flick carded fluff; I spin 1, then have to stop, grab another, attach it, and start up again. I prefer continuous spinning.

Combing is out, mainly because of all the various lengths involved. I really don't want to spin guard hair only yarn.

So, I sat down at the drumcarder. I carded enough fiber to make 1 nice batt, then I doffed it, split it down the center, and ran it through again. 2 passes made a nice prep; no neps, no noils, all the fiber was pretty much aligned, and most of the (very little) icky stuff fell right out. It did a good job blending the 2 coats (and various dogs, too, for that matter).

I set up my Scottish wheel with the jumbo flyer array - not for the size of the bobbins (which are HUGE) - because it has the slowest ratios of my AA wheels (my Ashford is still on walkabout, or I would have tried it next. My AA is really above this sort of thing, y'know? *g*) I don't have the whorl size in front of me for the ratios, but it's quite a bit slower than the Norwegian. I set it for the least amount of draw-in, attached a bit to the leader, and off I went.

I effortlessly spun a nice, lace-weightish single. Long draw, for the most part. The single is pretty consistent; there are a few places where the "2nd cuts" hang out, but not many (I would have to pick them out of the batt before spinning if I wanted perfectly even yarn - too much effort!). The guard hairs make a nice halo. The batt held together nicely, and spun pretty much effortlessly.

The fiber *does* shed, however. I'll need to wear an apron the next time I sit down to spin. It appears that only the guard hairs are shedding - but I didn't really take the time to scrutinize my clothes after I finished the batt. *g*

I'll probably sit down tonight and card up some more batts....spin them tomorrow or Sunday. It went pretty fast - I ran thru that batt in about 20 minutes or so. Besides, the faster I tear thru the Pyr fluff, the faster I can get to spinning the batts I got from [livejournal.com profile] moderngypsy off of her etsy site. *g*

Blech...

no new knitting to report - the wrist has decided to go on strike. It's not major - yet - so I am doing everything in my power to keep it that way. Just a little achy. *sigh* And I'm 1/2 way down the foot!!!

I traded for an inkle loom Saturday - a bag of all the lambs wool I had left for a larger inkle. It's....OK. Nothing to brag about; it has no finish on it (except the Wood Beams I put on it) and it really needs to be sanded...but it holds a full yard more than the one I already had. I like my old one better, though, because it's a lot more compact, and sits on the table level. I really need to get pics of them both - I have been looking for someone to recreate my first inkle, but without pics it's hard to explain - maybe that'll happen tonight. I've been weaving on it....meh. It's OK. *shrug* I need new bodice laces, and this seemed like a good time to start on them.

On the spinning front, I am plowing thru the EE-dyed BL from this weekend. I started out seeing how fine I could go....wow. 1 hour, and I hadn't even made thru 4 rolags. I decided the Hell with *that*, and bumped it up from Extra-fine to Fine...and 30 minutes later still hadn't made it to the other side of the bobbin. *eg* I don't think *that* requirement is going to be hard to meet - the singles were (surprisingly to me) very consistant and even. Even when I bumped it up a notch. (This was on the AA...I get much better results on her than I do on the Ashfords.)

I'm slowly getting my notes and thoughts together on the written portion of the COE. LOTS of info, but the instructions say "briefly describe". *sigh* Must work on my conciseness. (That's why I am using a notebook for this phase; I'll transcribe it into Word Perfect when I get everything together.)

I need to gather quite a bit of fiber for this, too. I have - pretty much - plenty of cotton (ya think 50+ pounds of raw, still on the boll cotton is "plenty"?), a strick and a 1 pound roving of flax, 1 full (scoured) Romney Fleece (for 1 of the worsted skeins), a silk mawata (dyed by the lovely Steph Gaustad, no less!), some...tussah (?)...roving...but I need some Down Fleece, some Fine Fleece, and some luster fleece. Fun stuff - gee, guess I need to start looking at fleeces, huh?

Equipment-wise, I need a "heavy" supported spindle. I *think* I can use my AA Celtic spindle for it, but I'll have to experiement. I have a nice coin takhli, as well as a bead spindle, so the small supported spindle is covered...and I have enough other spindles to cover the rest of the requirements. I have a charka, so the wheel-driven spindle is covered, and I have access to *2* Great Wheels (1 working, 1 not quite)..so *that's* covered. (You only need access to a "Wheel-driven Spindle", which the charka is, but I think it'd be cool to play with a Great Wheel as well.) Of course, I have my beloved AA flyer and treadle wheel, as well as the Ashford Traveller and (for now, anyway) the Joy. (Someone took an option on it last year; if they still want it, the Joy is GONE. Otherwise, it'll be up on the Housecleaning Pages.)

I've already learned a LOT of stuff...amazing how much stuff you skim over when you're just reading to be reading. I also see how much more I NEED to learn...*sigh*. I think ILL is going to get a huge workout from me over the next year.

Ah, well...back to the books. Today we are studying "In Sheep's Clothing", to decide what types of fleeces I need to hunt for. Tomorrow, I'll attempt to stay awake for Mabel Ross.....must stock up on caffeine. *eg*
fiberaddict: (fiber: socks in progress)
Not much knitting today - I'm trying to spare my wrists for the spin-a-thon tomorrow. The sock is coming along nicely - I'm about 1/3 down the foot now.

I had forgotten how....icky...unblocked lace looks. This sock - which does, in fact, fit my foot - looks like a child's sock right now. The lace has scrunched up and collapsed, and just looks tiny. I've tried it on *5* times now, and it definately fits, so I am refusing to worry about it.

Everything is ready to pack - I cleaned and waxed the wheel last night. Tonight, I will load the van, make a batch of chicken salad, and vacuum at the living room.

Nothing else much to report - I dug out a bunch of spinning books, and am starting the study portion of the COE requirements. Gives me something to do, and I am actually noticing things I skimmed over before. I still don't know that I'm actually going to submit anything...which is why I need a buddy...but knowledge and practise never hurts.

The stumbling block for me, is that most of the skeins you submit have to be singles. I ply all my yarns, so spinning a balanced, useful single is going to take a bit of work. Not impossible, no, but work. I have until Feb 1, 2007 to make up my mind, so I'm not going to think about it now, just get on with the spinning and research.
