Yesterday was a GOOD day. I don't normally check email on Shabbat, but I did yesterday AM, because Hearthie had offered to do my colors, and...well, we had plans and I hoped that would help me not make a mistake.

See, there was an ad on CraigsList....seems the Plano chapter of the Sewing Guild of America (American Sewing Guild? Something like that) had been donated too much fabric/sewing stuff, and needed to downsize....so they were having a garage sale. We drove 57 miles, but it was worth it.

Sale started at 8; we got there about 8:10 (it was actually 8:07, but whatever.) There were already about 20 shoppers, and the selection was picked over. In 10 minutes!!!! Still, I didn't do too badly:

fabric total haul

That's the total haul. The big thing - for me! - is the 2 bolts of muslin I scored - the long, rolled one is 25 yards; it was $15 (it's also a mid-weight, instead of light, and it's 60" wide). The bolt is 20 yards, and it was $5. In fact, ALL the bolts were $5/each, and each one has at least 15 yards. Have some closeups:

fabric blue and brown

The blue print will be a dress, skirt, and top...and probably a bunch of other things. The brown will be a dress and skirt...not sure about a top, but hey! $5! (Patterns were $0.25...and we got quite a few. Most are sleeveless dresses.....I'm going to raise the dropped waist ones, the rest will probably be sewn "normally".

fabric teal floral brown and muslin

The floral needs to be lined, but I actually like it. The teal...well, I LOVE teal. This is a better shot of the brown - I just loved the print. I left a dark purple and black paisley, because it was just too dark for me - it was hard, but I don't think I could make it work.

fabric teal orange and flame

The flame-looking fabric was Herself's request. It's a knit (nasty, thin, roll-y knit. :shudder:), but she LOVES the color - what's a Mom to do? The orange isn't the right color here - it's not flaming, it's more.....reddish? It actually leans a little coral (although Herself vehemently denies this - she HATES coral; she claims it's a nice......Red. Uh-huh. It leans coral, is all I'm saying.) She can wear it, and I can too - I checked in the mirror when we got home. NOT my favorite color, but it'll work. It's also the same fabric as the teal - it has a subtle bows-and-flower pattern going on. This is a closer match to the teal - it's not dark, and it leans green. The 2 bobbin racks were $2/each.

All of the patterns are "vintage" - I think most of them are from the '80s. I tried to grab classic looks - the dresses are semi-fitted, with flowy skirts and simple bodices. The skirt patterns are all full, because that's what I prefer. I think I ended up with 10 patterns - not too shabby! I didn't pay attention to the sizing (don't panic!) - I have a Craftsy course on grading patterns, so I felt confident in buying what I liked instead of picking thru for my specific size.

We then hit JoAnn's - I can't find my tailor's chalk - and I got 2 more patterns (Simplicity were on sale for $1.99). 1 is a reissue of one from 1940 - it has some cute blouses. The other is a skirt pattern that Ali shared with me. LOVE the skirts.....I should be good to go now. Most of the dresses and skirts have the same silhouette, but that's OK by me. Sleeveless is good for Texas - especially in late Spring/Summer/early Autumn.

I'm set for muslin, now - I can fit patterns to my heart's desire. Seriously, this takes a weight off; I no longer have to fret over how many re-dos I do. I'm trying to not waste fabric, but I can be a little less cautious with my changes now. I still need to pick up some power net and soft elastic - I need some new bras, and it'll be cheaper to make my own (AND they'll fit better!). :sigh: It's never-ending, isn't it?

I'm hoping to sew up the muslin for my 1944 House Dress, but we'll see. I have to run to Sam's to pick up stuff for SG's aunt.

to show you the fabric haul from today! Herself and I headed out at 10 and hit 6 fabric outlet stores in Dallas (Perth Street, for those familiar with the area.) We ended up spending $136.....but look at the haul:

fabric haul

ALL of that, from 2 stores (the others had stuff, but the prices weren't as good. Good? Yes...but the largest haul came from a place that was mostly $3/yard cottons. And $3/yard stretch knits.

Let's take a closer look, shall we? First up, dress fabric for me:

fabric dresses 2

fabric dresses

The white is a linen/rayon blend ($3/yard!!!!), and will be the Decades of Style 1944 Housedress, as will the purple-y polka-dot and the screamingly bright geometric print. The cherries and green fabrics will become a Walk-away dress. Everything except the white is cotton...the cherries and the green are Moda (yeah, quilting cotton. I'm not looking for every day wear here, although they WILL be worn. And - $3/yard!!!! I got 4 yards of everything except the cherries - that's 5 yards. I wasn't sure if I wanted to do a 2-color walk-away, or 1....so I got enough to do either one.

I'll be honest - the geometric print is a bit...loud, but fun. Trimmed in green it should work for me....besides, everyone needs a fun dress, right? :nods: The linen/rayon is a bit...pastel, but I LOVE the hand of it, and the print is nice and feminine without being overly floral. The polka-dot and cherries are just fun.

We got Herself some fabric, too:

fabric C

The "tin type" print will be a dress - probably the 1944 housedress, but we're still discussing that (it's 4 yards, so more than enough for a dress for her. The Housedress only needs 3.25 yards for the largest size...I prefer to have extra fabric for "just in case"). The print is a knit, and will become a tank - there's enough there for 2, maybe 3 tank tops (which means I might end up with one, too.)

fabric C knits

More knits - the flame will be tanks, the blue will be - eventually! - a 1950's draped top (from Mrs. Depew on etsy). It's a draft-to-your-measurements pattern, so it'll be a while. Still - $3.50/yard, in a color she went gaga over.

fabric - muslin bolt

Here's a bolt of muslin-esque fabric. Feels like either polished cotton or a cotton/poly blend....the entire bolt was $25. $1/yard. It's a wee bit lighter weight than the dress fabrics, but it was this or paying $6.50/yard for a heavier-weight true muslin. I opted to do this - it feels like a nice, well-worn sheet.

And, a last-minute impulse purchase - a pair of tailor's shears:

fabric - shears

One of the stores uses these to do all their cutting, and it was only $10. I figured, why not?

So, that was today's haul. I am set for a while on fabric...I just need to get the blasted diamond dress fitted, then I can start sewing for *real*. The housedress and walk-away dress should be a walk in the park after this...... I need to read up on altering patterns with princess seams (the housedress), but it doesn't look hard - and Pattern Review says it's an easy pattern.

My leg is stiff, but not as sore. I've been hitting it with Arnica, and the swelling is down - but it is turning all sorts of colors.

I'm pleased with today's field trip. Tomorrow I'll retrace the pattern - Again - and cut the muslin. I am not planning on sewing it until Sunday....let it think about what it's put me thru. :snicker:
